Description
Hornbeer is a farmhouse brewery founded in the beginning of 2008 by Gunhild and Jorgen Fogh Rasmussen. The first brewery was very small, brewing only 300 liter batches. But end of July 2008 the brewery burnt down to the ground. Now Gunhild and Jorgen had to start again from scratch. In January 2009 the new brewery started operations. Nowadays the production is around 2000 hl/year. Hornbeer is well known for a very different assortment. Hornbeer´s philosophy is that the beers should be distinctive but still very drinkable.

Huge, dense white head, speckled with tiny UFO’s over clean amber ale. Very hoppy nose, USA hops and mint, freshly plucked. Bitter, hoppy flavour, severy, nearly metallic. Well-carbonated, medium bodied. Bit surprising, but generally pleasing ale.

Dark beige head, small, over pitch-black beer. Coffee, burnt malt or barley, oats, coffee drab. Slightly sweetened cream-coffee, freshly roasted. Full-bodied, very slick and viscous. Quite good R.I.S.

2009-11-27, cask at Lord Nelson, Copenhagen, 9-4-8-4-17=42
Cloudy amber color; thin but persistent head. Interesting aroma: caramel, cheese, finally fruits. Good mouthfeel, smooth because of the low cask carbonation, with good caramel flavor and some sweetness; fruity hopping. Very pleasant.

Hazy amber color, thick head. Aroma of hops, partially fruity, and caramel. Good body structure, with a strong toffee flavor and strong bitterness; the hop qualities (some fruity character and the resins) show mostly towards the end. There are no more the traces of a fermentation/maturation issue as last time I tried it, but the yeast presence is still too noticeable.

Hazy amber color, creamy head. It’s a good and solid IIPA, with a very good sweet toffee flavor and a quite strong body; also the bitterness is quite bold; but the fermentation process has to be improved, as there are strange traces here and there... (esters, diacetyl?)

Draught at Ølfestival 2008, Århus
Absolute black color, thin creamy head. Glue-ish stout aroma. It has a medium body, with a good mix of caramel, chocolate and roasted malt, some residual sweetness; the late flavor has a light harshness too. Not much Russian, but quite good anyway.

Bottle at Ølfestival 2008, Århus, X Konkurrence
Cloudy amber color. Despite being described as an English IPA, it has a nice Cascade aroma, but not much persistent. The mouthfeel is quite British, with a good, dry toffee flavor, and the yeast job produced a rather harsh feeling. Quite bitter final. Good.
