Bull Eye Gluten Free Pale Ale from Nickel Brook Brewing Co.

As a salutation of solidarity to my gluten-free brothers, I rate this beer. Quite frankly, I have no idea what it means to be sensitive to "gluten", or any other thing out there - I eat them all, and in some countries they give me the runs, but little else. So the fact that such a problem exists, and persists, and is even important enough that brewers will make a beer that avoids your affliction, I feel for you. It has a typical head and yellow body, the aroma is heavy on the hops but also exhibits leather, meat, salt, soft hops. The flavour is very perfumatic hops, several layers of it, lending a plantiness to the whole experiment. I’d call it a weird beer, it lacks balance, but then again I’m not averse to gluten and cannot say what a gluten-allergic person might think of the thing. Amidst all my non-gluten beers, this one is all right. For sure.

Pretty interesting taste. Soft on tongue, great level of carbonation. A touch of sweetness but no overdose or anything

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a smooth chocolate with light spoiled meats, boiled veggies. In mouth, a smooth smoked chocolate with creamy sugars, caramelized, not bad. Cask Days, Oct. 30 2011.

A reddish amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, a smooth hoppy grassy hops with biscuit notes. In mouth, a smooth biscuitty malt with orange and grapefruit pulp, floral hops, nice and smooth. Cask at Beau’s Oktoberfest Oct. 1 2011.

Originally rated August 2006. This fruit pilsner pours a clean yellow colour with a nice white creamy head that has very good retention and leaves a beautiful uniform layer of lace all around. Carbonation is very active. The nose is pure candy green apple. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The taste starts on an apple scent and then lands on a grainy malt flavour. The apple juice is quite present, but not really sweet, just right. A very nice alternative to one of my favorite retired brew... the Niagara Brewery Apple Ale.

Originally rated August 2006. Beautiful creamy off-white yellowish head that has great retention. The brew is clear copper in colour and has a good amount of active carbonation. Lacing is thick and patchy. The aromas are light with grainy malt and bittern hops hidden in the back. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The taste is also light, with some refreshing malt, apples in the middle and mild corn in the finish. Hop is also present as a flavour, but not in bitterness. I enjoyed this one as an easy-drinking cream ale... and like the description says, so did my girlfriend.

Canette 473ml sous le nom "Nickel Brook Gluten Free" et titrant à 5,8% d’alcool. De couleur dorée et claire. Nez de grains de céréales sucrés et de légumes bouillis, moyen de caramel butterscotch et d’alcool métallique, léger de fruits (pommes macérées, notes d’agrumes, traces d’ananas) et de houblon floral aux notes citriques et herbeuses (herbes mouillées). Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-fort et une texture légèrement huileuse. Moyen-léger goût fruité (pommes macérées, traces d’agrumes et de poires vertes) accompagné de notes de légumes bouillis sucrés lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de grains de céréales moyennement sucrées avec un léger goût de butterscotch et des notes de pain mouillé puis en finale l’on retrouve une légère amertume de houblon herbeux (herbes mouillées) avec des petites traces florales ainsi que des traces d’alcool métallique. Post-goût moyen-court composé d’une légère amertume de houblon herbeux avec un léger goût fruité (pelures de pommes, pépins de poire) et des petites traces d’alcool.

Canette 473ml. De couleur dorée pâle et claire. Nez fruité (bonbon aux pommes vertes), léger de grains de malt pâle sucrés avec des notes herbeuses (gazon mouillé). Mince en bouche avec un pétillement moyen et une texture légèrement minérale et aux petites notes sirupeuses fruitées. Goût fruité assez sucré (bonbon aux pommes vertes) présent dès l’entrée en bouche et pour toute la durée de la gorgée auquel se rajoute un léger goût de grains de malt pâle puis en finale l’on retrouve des notes herbeuses (herbes mouillées). Post-goût court, composé d’un goût fruité (résiduel de pommes sucrées) avec des traces herbeuses.

A deep dark porter with a very thin light moka head. In aroma, a sweet peaty vanilla and maple, woody, a bit simple. In mouth, a thin peaty chocolate with light lactic notes, coffee grinds, a bit on the simple side. Cask at Ottawa cask fest., June 26 2011.

A hazed orange amber ale with a thin big bubbled off white head. In aroma, floral hops with grassy qualities, pinhey, light catnip, very nice. In mouth, a classic smooth dry hopped IPA with floral and resinous hops, grassy, lingering bitterness, quite nice and challenging. Cask, dry hopped and oaked, at Ottawa cask fest., June 26 2011.
