Description
The Cromarty Brewing Co is a family run business consisting of Craig, Chap and Jenni Middleton. Craig, our fanatical founding brewer studied the science of brewing at Heriot Watt University and the art of beer making in the student accommodation and flat basements. After finishing the course he went on to do some work in various breweries to gain valuable experience. It was during this time that he decided he wanted to get his own beers to market.
In the spring of 2011 construction of the brewery started on the shed works and some awesome stainless steel was ordered from Bavarian Brewery Technologies. Hectic times and long hours later led to the first of the casks rolling out on the 19th December 2011.

Bottle from Tomlinson’s beer shop, Inverness and also fresh straight from the brewery! It pours pretty much black, with a thin off-white head. The nose is rich coffee, roasted malt, cocoa powder and a touch of dark fruit. The taste is rich coffee, roasted malt, bitter chocolate, light acidity from the coffee, light creaminess, dark fruit and charcoal, with a very dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Really good rich coffee flavour. A very accomplished and flavoursome brew at this percentage. Well done Chappy!

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness and also fresh straight from the brewery! It pours deep mahogany brown, with a small white head. The nose is caramel, dark fruit, spice, rye and wood. The taste is wood, leather, rye bread, spice, zesty citrus, dark fruit sweetness and varnish, with a bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Interesting, well balanced and flavoursome. Great stuff!

Cask at Blackfriars, Inverness and also later in bottle. It pours golden yellow, with a medium white head. The nose is freshly cut grass, citrus pith and white bread. The taste is citrus pith, grapefruit, light soapiness, straw, grass and sweet malt notes to balance everything out. Finishes with light bitterness. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. Good balance and flavour. A sold session ale and good start for this new brewery.

Cask @ The Golden Rule, Edinburgh
Golden amber, clear, thick white creamy head, good lacing
Aroma - sweet fruity malts, apricot, peaches, sweet mellow citrus
Taste - sweet fruity malts, soft apricot and citrus, hint of banana, tropical fruits, soft sweet caramel malts, some bitter grassy hop in the background. Good flavour for the abv - not over hoppy bitter but the fruits are still there
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body, bit oily, smooth. Finish as main flavour, nice grassy hop on the tail
Overall - This is a really good session beer - lots of flavour for the abv without lots of hop bitterness.

Cask @ The Caley, Edinburgh 300612
Reddish brown, clear, creamy white head, good lacing
Aroma of grassy hops, caramel malts. Taste of grassy hops, some soft rye, dark bit creamy caramel malts, lots of hop flavour - mainly grassy grapefruit.
Palate - soft carb. medium body, tangy citrus grass. smooth. Finish as main flavour, bitter, nice linger not too intense.
Overall - I find rye gives an slightly odd cereal flavour in a beer, but it works really well for me in this beer. It’s certainly better on cask - I don’t think it works as well on keg.

On tap @ Duke’s Corner, Dundee. Pours golden with some head. The nos is bursting with pine and grapefruit. The taste has grapefruit and particularly grapefruit pith. the palate is medium bodied with a tangy middle texture and a clean, zingy finish. Overall, a modern pale ale by numbers, basically!
