This is what Avery The Czar should have been. Poured deep chestnut brown with a thin light tan head. Poured with a fruity aroma laced with hints of wine and tangy oak. Rich flavor of toast and caramel, tangy sweet oak barrel, bourbon, red grape, chocolate, and alcohol. Rather thin-bodied but very full-flavored. The barrel aging is not over-the-top and significantly enhances this beer.

2003 Bottle (wax-sealed): Pours a hazy golden orange color with a medium beige head. Thin lacing. The aroma is pungent malt, pine and alcohol. Rihc bodied and somewhat smooth, with a strong malt/caramel backbone, along with alcohol, citrus and hops. The finish is fair, with mild bitterness and not overly sweet like some Barley Wines can be. Alcohol comes through a little bit in the finish as well. Overall pretty well-balanced but not that complex. I would probably get it again though.

Pours deep copper/red with a minimal off-white head. Cerealy, caramely aroma. Body is very toasty and sweet, with lots of caramel and a bit of nuttiness. I could drink several of these.

Bottled. Hazy orange. Bready and mildly malty. The ginger sets in immediately, but doesn’t dominate the nose too much, and doesn’t get too overwhelming. Spicy, soft and quitr interesting. Quite low bitterness.

I always have trouble getting the corks out of these bottles. What I usually do is break the top part off trying to take it out, then use a corkscrew. This beer is definitely worth buying a corkscrew if you don't have one. I am going to start oak aging everything I eat and drink if it turns out this well. The beer is a dark black color with a massively thick dark beige head. The aroma is roased malt, toffee and chocolate. Big rich and sweet body just how I like them. Abundant malt flavor, along with chocolate, coffee and vanilla. The finish has the perfect amount of hops and dark chocolate to balance it out. This is a truly great Imperial Stout.

This lacked the characteristic head a Stout should have. Good color, but the aroma and flavor needed intensity to be a top rater. Not a bad brew, but nothing fantastic.

Left Hand works the Ginger thing well. This is mildly spicy, light and refreshing. A different beer for sure.

[Sampled March 2008 - tasted blind] A dark deep red beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel, but also lighter notes of chocolate and vanilla, like an ice cream topping. The hints of alcohol tickles the palate.[7/4/7/4/15=3.7]

Nice amber color and an aroma of malt and hops. Almost an APA, but not quite. Well balanced, drinkable beer.

This stout looks like Bells Trumpeter, pouring a translucent dark red. This is very similar to Mackeson XXX Stout with its sweet milk chocolate aroma and flavor with just a hint of roast. Thin-bodied and simple but very tasty nonetheless.
