Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours very dark brown/black with a slight dark tan head. First aroma was anise. Next was sweetish burnt malt with some darker fruit and coffee. Full bodied. Flavor starts a bit sweet, goes a bit creamy burnt malt, and moves on to dark fruit and coffee. Not getting chocolate. It’s a bit peppery/spicey. Finishes towards dryish and lightly astringent, but each taste starts over sweet. Play it again Caldera.

Enjoyable IPA. Good hop aroma with notes of pine, spruce, grapefruit, pineapples, mango and wildflowers. There’s some caramel malt presence that shows itself more in the taste. The taste has a bit too much crystal malt presence and bland bitterness but is otherwise very solid. Mouthfeel is a touch slick. The aftertaste is yeasty and bitter. This is a good regular rotation IPA, but it could get a bit lost in the shuffle of good IPAs on the shelves around here.

Whole Foods, DC six-pack ($11): Pours a light amber with a very proper head. Aroma of malts, grapefruit, and pina. Obviously the fruity aromas come from the citrusy hops. The taste is pretty hoppy and leaves some aftertaste, but there is a very solid malt backbone in there as well. Very well-balanced with different flavors popping up throughout. Hops are definitely not one dimensional in this beer.

Bottle: A rusty orange pour with a creamy ring of sand colored head. Thick sheets of lacing coat the glass. Ample hops in the aroma, citrus and piney. Smells sticky sweet. The hoppiness has a soft impact up front, almost silky and wet. Piney and floral hops really take over midstride before finishing with a dirty floral and malty tail. Plenty of bitterness here. Enjoyable.
