Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a murky apricot with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. Tropical fruits and apricot are the mainstays of the aroma. In the mouth it is somewhat sweet and juicy with a creamy texture. Flavours are tropical fruits, floral hops, pineapple, mango and hints of soft citrus. Traces of melon and spice later, leading to a slightly bitter and sticky finish. Not bad but I don’t know why it’s classed as an IPA.

On-tap in the Sun, Stafford on Sunday 2nd August 2026. Hazed orange body, white crust. Lemon esters and flavours to the fore as you'd expect. Not really my thing to be honest.

Keg, third of a pint on my second flight in the Coracle, Ironbridge, 24th July 2026. Very hazy look, white topping. Citrus fruit special, too much for me really, scored objectively and kindly.

Cask at Sun, Stafford. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. Is slow to settle but does so eventually. Aroma has flowers, yeast and malts. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy. Flavours are mainly malts, citrus and floral hops plus hints of herbs, grapefruit and honey. Some bitterness in the dry finish. This is reasonable and certainly refreshing – but a bit too much citrus for my taste.
