Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Handpull cask at the King's Head, Leicester. Light to mid-gold, clear with a small loose white head. Floral and fruity aroma, some mango and sweet melon. Taste is sweet, more tropical fruit, with a tiny bitterness near the finish. Medium oily body with almost no carbonation. A cut above most of the loads of sessionable pales that Salopian is putting out lately.

Old rating - A 500ml bottle brought back from Shrewsbury by a friend. Pours a deep dark colour with a brown foamy head. Aromas of malt. Tastes of malt, mocha, oats & cocoa. Highly enjoyable, surprising considering this is not really my favourite style so must be very good. Different bottle of beer in my home No. 1977

Old rating - Pours a straw colour with a small white head. Aroma has light floral hops, grass & citrus fruits. Taste is also quite light, but really crisp, with citrus, peach, pine, grass, some biscuit & some honey. Finish is lingering bitter, grassy and crisp.

Gravity poured half pint at the Black Bear (Whitchurch) Beer Festival on 23rd May 2025. Blonde with a white topping. Another citrusy brew from these guys, this time using New Zealand hops.

First (and worst) beer at the annual beer & cider festival in the Black Bear (Whitchurch) on 23rd May 2025. Hand pulled half pint in the pub garden. Hazed dirty golden body, white wispy head. Sour citrus taste, almost poured it onto the flowers but thought it might kill them. No idea why people like these sort of beers, I certainly don't.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours almost black with minimal tan head and good lacing. The aroma is a not unpleasant mix of roasted malts, raspberries and coffee. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a little underlying sharpness. Flavour is mainly milky coffee, summer fruits and roasted malts. Hints of cola and gooseberries come later leading to a slightly dry finish. This is reasonable – but a bit weird.

Old rating from 04-08-15 - 500ml bottle, brought back from Shrewsbury for me by a friend. Pours a very cloudy golden colour with a white head that lasts. Aromas of grapefruit and other fruits. Tastes very strongly of grapefruit, citrus, tangerine, lemon.. with the hops providing a nice IPA kick. Feels very summery, with some real quality in there.
