Bottle at de koninck, antwerp, Orval style. Hazy golden color with a big bubbly white head. Funky smell. Aroma is brett, lactose, dry hopping and Citrus, incense, sandalwood labender and perfume, brass, old furniture. Strong carbonation. Light to medium body, spiced dry finish. Taste quite bitter and yeasty. Very soapy, out of the ordinary, for brett lovers, other wise really weird.

Sample at de koninck, antwerp. Dark brown color, dark, hazed. Big creamy beige head. Aroma of licorice, chocolate, toasted flavors, with hints of cherry, tobacco, roots, mint. Taste is complex, there?s a babe smoked fish aftertaste. Complex taste, sweetish, fairly balanced, juicy. South balsamic finish. Powerful, not an easy one.

Sample at the brewery. Golden color, clear, big white head, persistent.Malty aroma with sugar and honey with light grassy notes, stone spices as well.Taste is sugary, syrupy, sweet very light bitterness so it goes in similarly to a malt liquor and alone may be meaningless. But, with Farmdal cheese the match is incredible, an explosion of flavours.

pale Gold color short white head. Aroma is indeed spiced with herbs, cardamom stands out with citrus. It’s well mixes, the spice.are not excessive and it’s easy to drink. Simple malts background with light belgian ale esters, spiced refreshing/balsamic finish, good for summer.

From 33cl bottle. Pours classic gold with medium evanescent foam, fine and white. Aroma is fruity but also hay and grass, nicely balanced. Body is relatively dense with good carbonation. Taste is definitely sweet, with a good bitterness for a Belgian triple. Finish is a little too sweet in my view.

Bottle (random place Antwerp). Pours golden. Aroma is fruity, yeasty, spicy, some booze. Flavor is sweet and bitter, belgian yeast, sugar, fruits, booze, spiciness. Finish has some bitterness. Overall: solid triple.

Draught at De Koninck Duvel Bar, Antwerp. Pale greenish yellow (not golden) pour with a short-lived, off-white head. Aroma is quite high: old oaken cask, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, citrus peel, dandelion, butter... Very complex indeed. Taste begins sweetish, slightly pungent, medium-bodied. Not really sour, nor even completely fresh. Persistent (but low level) bitterness. Long-lasting finish with a touch of roses. Good.

Bottle (from koht), bb 05.2015. Pours amber. Aroma is sweet, caramel, malt. Flavor is sweet, sugar, malt, some fruits. Body is watery. Carbonation is quite high. Overall: ok, should try fresher version, this is clearly past its prime (hence generous rating). tap at arsenaal. More bitter, less watery. Rating would be about same.

33 cl bottle at De Serre, Antwerp, right at the Plantentuin. Very nice label and cap art. It pours intense golden with an abundant tan head that disappears in the blink of an eye. Aroma is ginger, ginger, ginger; also pepper, roses, lemon, cardamom. But mostly ginger. Low carb, light, quite watery. Short-lived, slightly bitterish finish.

Okay, I must say this one should be ranking higher, IMHO. I don’t know whether I’d be able to tell it from Orval in a blind tasting: it’s pretty damn well done following that mighty difficult path (ask Mikkeller.) So, yes, it’s not the original nor exactly as good, but it’s right there. So, if you like Orval, quite surely you’ll like this one-eyed pigeon. Right, the tasting: pours intense yellow (but not golden) with greenish highlights (yes, this is not like Orval, I know.) Aroma is in the high grades: lambic, Orval, yeast, cider, grass, pear. Also lemon, sweet apple... This is more like it, isn’t it? Taste is dry, medium body, fizzy, great acidity. Just a tinge of bitterness at the end. A decent industrial Orval mimic.
