Description
Jenny Chamberlain's family have owned the Countryman pub in Ingoldmells since 1960 and Barry Good has been there since 1974. The idea for a brewery came in the summer of 2007. He and Scott Colebourne (who was working at the Countryman at the time and became head brewer) decided to experiment with a "hobby" brewery and were easily persuaded by the manufacturer who also supplied a simple recipe and brewing kit. Fortunately, the pub had previously stocked beers from the Fugelestou Brewery (Louth) and Phil Ellis provided free and friendly advice to the Countryman team. Taking away what he learnt from Phil and a single-hop ale recipe, Scott went to work producing his first brew.

Success bred success and Barry purchased a 2.5 barrel plant from Poacher's Brewery in Lincoln which had downsized production. A stable on the Countryman site had become vacant and this was converted and the plant installed between December 2008 and March 2009. By summer 2010, brewing was sufficiently advanced to have all three beers permanently on tap and as bottle-conditioned "carry-outs". However, as the latter are still hand-filled, they may not always be available.

LAZY DAYS: Hand pulled pint in ’The Countryman’ which is the name of the brewpub that fronts Liela Cottage beers. Light golden body with a white foaming head: easy drinking session beer with a mini-bitter finish and smell. I found it an unassuming brew that although containing a pleasant blend of flavours there was a lack of ’umph’: it is only 3.6% ABV though and ideal for all the local oldies who arrive in their mobility scooters each lunchtime.

Picked up from the Brewpub by Barry, Dec 2011, cheers Barry. Consumed 11th March 2012 Btw i have the bottle in front of me and I am certain that this is the same beer, but it is called Leila Cottage Leila’s Lazy Days NOT Hazy Days. Pours gold, there is a touch of haziness, white head. Keen to get out of the bottle but not too much of a gush, very slight hint of sharpness on the nose. Touch of citrus, drying, very, very slight sourness but not too bad. Really quite dry, light bitterness, it’s ok. A5 A3 T5 P3 Ov11 2.7

Bottle that Barry, friend picked up from the brewpub for me, thanks Barry consumed 19.01.12 Very lively on pour almost volcano like, however it tasted and smelt ok. Pours amber with a slight haze large off white head. fairly standard boring brown bitter, very safe with hop usages and not too bitter or challenging. Its ok. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Bottle that Barry, friend picked up from the brewpub for me, thanks Barry consumed 10.12.11 Pours murky brown, there is a slight sourness on the nose and in mouth, hinting at possible infection. Fruity, powdery in mouth and despite the possible yeast infection, it’s ok but from what Barry says this is probably better at the brewpub, as he really enjoyed it there, bottling has not really done this many favours sadly.
