Description
Our name, Almanac, refers to the Farmer’s Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published every year in the U.S. since 1818. Our motto, “Farm to Barrel”, was adopted to reflect our passion for brewing bold and sustainably sourced beers. Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in sustainably sourced ingredients and using them to create beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. We aim to create something uniquely Northern Californian.

Almanac was founded in 2010 by Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two avid home-brewers who bonded over their mutual appreciation for California farmers markets. They set out to brew beers inspired by California’s rich agricultural bounty. After nearly seven years of partner brewing, we moved into our very own 30,000 square-foot production & aging facility located on a historic naval airbase on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay.

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark, dark brown with a 3 finger creamy tan head. Aroma is very chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is dark bitter chocolate that relaxes a bit on darkness. Then it seems coffee comes out. Firm flavors. Finishing tasty and bitter.

Aroma has lots of Belgian yeast character along with some light fruitiness and some oak notes. A nondescript fruitiness - definitely not berry but there is a lot of fruit. A moderate phenolic note and some light oak aroma. Light alcohol character in the aroma. Pours a cloudy golden orange with some copper notes. A thin white head with pour retention. Some light lacing and small lacing. Some sweet malt character up front with a lot of fruitiness. Some light phenolic notes as well as a good amount of oak. Medium low acidity and tartness from the berries. Some alcohol in the finish and medium low bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Moderately high alcohol warmth and low astringency. The flavor is a bit muddled and I'm not sure what this beer was meant to be. The fruit character isn't very clean and gets hidden behind the yeast notes and clashes a bit instead of compliments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draft at Tap 25 in Livermore and enjoyed in the company of Livermore spokesman, ratebeer’s own, joeneugs. It pours deep chocolate darkness with a tan head of foam. The aroma is full of chocolate and coffee and fully roasty malts. The taste delivers a firm chocolate to dark chocolate goodness and rolling toward dark roasted malts and dark roasted coffee. Damn tasty stuff.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a medium white head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, herbs, oranges. Flavor is quite herbal, light plus sweet with orange notes present but not dominant. Quite bitter, with a mix of hoppy and zesty notes. Not getting much wood, but there is certainly a complexity to the flavor beyond that of your typical APA. Finish is zesty bitter, lingering well into the far finish. Body is medium, some creaminess in the mouth. Points for originality here for sure. This is the best thing I have yet tried from Almanac.

Bottle at a ChrisO tasting, London. Pours cloudy gold with a creamy, white foam head. Lemon and grain on the nose. Medium to big sweet flavor wit big hay character, some light grass, white sugar. Medium bodied with average to high carbonation. Grassy bitter finish, more sugar and grains. Kind of odd. Not great. Has an incongruous bitterness and it’s also too sweet. I like this style but this beer misses on a few fronts.

Tap. Pours hazy amber with a small off white head that leaves decent lacing. Aroma is caramel, yeast and light spice. Flavor is the same, medium sweet and lightly bitter with muted spices. Finish is lightly bitter, a bit metallic. Body is quite full for the style and creamy in the mouth.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours slightly hazy bright lemon yellow. Light honey aroma. Med minus body. Flavor is a touch of honey with mild earthiness and a bit of hop. Overall it’s a very light drink; for me the ginger is only truly discernible towards the finish.

Bottle. Pours pale hazy yellow with a medium white head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is wheat, spices, ginger, lemon. Taste is quite spicy with mild honey sweetness and a light bitter grassy/spicy/herbal finish. Quite interesting, but perhaps a little overspiced.
