I have to agree with Bov, this is just not up to Unibroue standards. The malt flavours do not develop, the hops seem stale and out of balance, and there is too much yeast. Updated tasting notes (2/4/02): very cloudy tan, unusual aroma of scrumpy, fresh tomatoes, yeast, yogurt and pears - not so pleasant. Palate leans towards rotting peaches, almonds, stewed plums with slight alcohol in the yeasty, off-dry finish. An absolute trainwreck- even worse than I'd originally thought. It lost .3 points on the new rating.

Like a lot of strong Belgian blondes and tripels, the alcohol sometimes emerges a little too much (though some people on this site are obviously hyper-sensitive to alcohol as the ratings of Trois Pistoles would indicate). Dark beige, pure white foam, aroma of fresh bell peppers, yeast, orange zest, dark german bread...aside from the alcohol the palate has a fair bit of malt, a somewhat thick finish, white pepper, almond skins, yeast (and lots of it), finishing dry with alcohol.

The comments here would verify my findings that the smokiness of this beer is rather variable. In any case, it's not a rauchbier. A soft, underlying smokiness combines with abundant yeastiness and cakey malts to make a decent, if unspectacular brew.

Golden coloured. Hazy. Very lively, complex and estery, light to medium bodied. Good beer!

Cherry flavoured ale. Slightly tart and mature, tastes of fresh fruit. Treacherously easy to drink. Outstanding!

Not so sweet, there's more alcohol and less body, the mouthfeel is lean; the malt is pleasant, some caramel, cola; the bitterness is mostly gone. It didn't oxidize much. Not too bad.

Brown colour, opaque, with generous compact head. I get earthy and dirty dark malts, no flavour depth, moderately sweet, with alcohol and some anise. Very low bitterness.
Not my kind of beer anymore.

Dark brown color; it pours watery, fizzy, with a medium sized head that disappears quickly, completely. The aroma, with caramel and chocolate, is distinctive and pleasant. The body is thinning, with caramel flavor, almost no sweetness, and a light oxidisation; the final is quite weak in the mouth, and also not much bitter anymore. Drinkable but too old.

Dark amber ale. Nice fresh aroma of hop and porto wine. Powerful brew, strong body, malt, raisin, alcohol, light liquorice. The palate is balanced but not very long and hoppy.
To be aged.
