Daisen G Beer is a craft beer brewery located in Tottori prefecture, in the Chugoku region, just north of Okayama. Located at the base of Mt. Daisen, which is more commonly known as Hōkifuji in the area, the brewery opened in 1997 as an off-shoot of the sake producing company Kumezakura Shuzō and San-in Sanso Corporation, a company that deals with high-pressure gas. The local area is famous for its clear spring water, sourced from the snow at the top of the mountain, and its black soil, kuroboku in Japanese, which is said to be some of the most fertile in Japan. This fertile soil has resulted in Daisen G Beer being able to grow its own barley, in the form of Daisen Gold, in the spring; Daisen G Beer’s own hops, called Weihen Hop, which are harvested in the summer, and also Yamadanishiki, a sake yeast that is used in the production of the beers such as Daisen G Yagō.
Tap at Beer Belly. Red-amber color with lace. Very cloudy. Malty nose, caramel, some chocolate, rather plain. Rich malt flavor, chocolate, a bit fruity, some pine. Nice malt but that’s all. Rather unbalanced and too yeasty and estery.
Bottle, 5.5%. Hazy straw with a white head that fades to a coat quickly. 3 Promising aroma is wheaty, fruity (grapes, under-ripe nectarines, green mango), funky and spicy (white pepper). A little bit of peachy bubblegum in the taste as well. It’s light bodied with lowish carbonation for a saison. Dry but not austerely so at the end. Really nice - quaffable with a little intrigue, a balance of fruit funk spice and bitterness.
Tap at Taiyo Sakaba. Nice classic daisen g yeast forward nose. Some light lemon and custard notes along with yeasty spice. Sweet on the palate but very Belgian, similar to Chimay white somehow. Finish is sweet with a touch of peppery yeast spice. More of a Belgian ale than an IPA I guess, but well done regardless of the name.
Bottle from Tanakaya. Big yeast-forward driven nose with some sake notes. More saison like notes come out as it warms. Average carbonation with a medium to medium heavy body. Sweet on the palate but not too cloying. The yeast really keeps things interesting. Slightly peppery on the finish. Completely different color than the old one, obviously a new recipe. Tap at Takumiya. Bright, deep gold, cloudy, lace. Bisctuiy malt flavor, spicy, citrus, yeasty. Sweet and estery flavor, biscuity malt. Rather thick, with not a lot of hops, as usual for Daisen.
Tap at CBM Terrace. Floral, wheat-forward nose with gummy worms and light peach notes. Well-balanced on the palate without a trace of booze.
