Established in 1845
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Bottle from Waitrose. Clear amber body with a beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of earth and dried leaves. Flavour of toffee and a rich, malty finish. Thin to medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Rich and well balanced.

Wow. Just wow. This is Porter as it should be. Big malt, bitter hops and (weirdly) a really meaty flavour. And I'm not complaining. This is not one for your sweet chasing fruity hop people. This is one for people who like good and traditional beers and if thats you then you will not be disappointed. I do think this will improve over the next few years.

Cask at The Jack Horner, Holborn 21/11/2025 Got lucky finding this on cask ❤️rich sweet and toasted malty and fruity, getting some nice caramel and toffee sweetness, marmalade peel and dark dried fruit shred, brown sugar sprinkle, nice spices into the lingering warming malty finish. Lovely.
Also a bottle picked up at Balham Waitrose week after enjoyed at home in London, very nice but not as big as an impression as on cask for me. Got a 2nd bottle and will revisit again in a few years.

Cask at The Hercules, Lambeth. Clear chestnut brown. Foamy off-white head. Aroma has chewy malts, caramel and berry sourness. Flavourwise it has tangy berries and underlying caramel. Hiwever it's less sweet than the aroma would.suggest. The berries add tartness and there is bitter woodiness and grains. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Spft slightly fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Decent old school stuff. Some twigs.

Cask at the Signal Box Euston. A clear pale amber orange coloured pour with a loose off white head. Aroma is nice layered rustic grains, white grape, dried fruits, apple, straw. Flavour is composed of dusty grains, heirloom malts, straw, some grain tannin, assertive grassy bittermess. The half that i did sank very easily, would have liked to had a full pint. Palate is semi sweet, tannin, grainy, decent cask condition.
