Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

2025 Limited Edition. Clear dark brown/almost black pour with a decent tan head. Aromas of (roasted) malt, grain, cocoa/chocolate, cream, raisin, berries - hints of wood and tobacco. Taste is malt, cocoa/chocolate, licquorice, orange peel, milk/cream, cherries, tobacco, wood and leather. Decent, long boozy finish. Wanted a big one to mark my 1500th tick and it did not dissapoint.

500ml bottle from Waitrose - Clear copper body with a short off-white head. Good caramel character with a big boost of alcohol, sweetness from a sugary barley sugar candy, warming and fulfilling.

For the style, it is a delightful strong ale not burning at 100% your throat, nice touch of malt, sugar, hop, a bit metalic, 03.11.17, at Prélaz, purchased at Crissier.

In my opinion, it is a classical imperial stout, all the qualities that you can expect, the notes of alcohol are really present, next one!! 11.12.17, purchased at Aligro.

(Bottle) Dark amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy tan head. Fruity nose with dried apricots, banana bread, honey and orange peel. Fruity, malty taste with notes of dried apricots, banana cake, orange peel, honey and a gentle spicy bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, quite sweet. Alcohol fairly well hidden. Tasty and harmonious. Very nice.

Bottle. Clear pale yellow featuring a great white head. Aroma of floral hops, grains, straw and a mild touch of citrus fruits. Taste of straw, grains, malts, some lemons and just a tiny hint of honey. Low bitteress. Low to medium carbonation. Alright. Somehow I get the impression this is the one to go with should ever find myself in Ale-Land but crave a Helles.
