Established in 1845
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Amber colour, though lokes like coloured water. Stout-aroma, little sweet. Half bitter, half sweet aroma. This has te potential of a good beer, but it uses it only half.

A solid dry porter dominated by chocolate and roasted flavors. Very smooth. Allow this one to warm, as the flavors are better pronounced at these temperatures. This is an excellent porter.

A very good beer, but not the best in the Fullers lineup. My sampling was of unknown age, but this beer should survive a few years and it could not have been more than 2-3 years old. Poured lightly hazy red-amber with a dense khaki head. Rich raisiny/fig aroma, not much hop aroma (herbal). Nicely balanced palate, its lightly sweet with caramel and raisin notes, followed by an herbal cough drop finish, which was surprisingly dry, with a light lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel was lightly tingly from the carbonation.

Bottle #52144. Thanks to T.A.R. for snagging one of these for me. Pours a very murky amber color with a thick and foamy light beige head, and thin lacing. Aroma of malt, molasses, and some alcohol. Nice strong flavor of malt, alcohol, ripe fruit and I think butterscotch. Flavor is well-balanced and subdued, like a less harsh Barley Wine. The bottle advised "best before the end of 2002", so this was in it's prime. Great warmer.

[cask at Cockney pub in Århus] A brown almost black beer with a small light brown head. The aroma is very faint with hints of the malt, fruit and a bit smokey. The flavor is really good - a lot better than the aroma promises - it is soft and filled with malt and fruit notes. A very nice beer.

Cask conditioned.
Smooth, fresh, good but not outstanding.

Nice golden colour, big bubbled head. No noticable hop in the smell, just an average lager smell. Some hops near the end of the taste, but other than that, just an average malty pale ale.

A deep ret slightly unclear beer with a small head. The aroma is flat and slightly fruity. And the flavor too was flat and fruity.

Excellent every time I had it in London. Has been disappointing at home probably because served too cold. Dark copper color. Slightly sweet flavor and sweet aftertaste that doesn't last long. Overall great if from a tap at correct temperature.

Gold and amber color, medium body. Flowery, sweet tastes, but where are the hops? This has no hop character whatsoever, especially for an IPA. A great disappointment.
