Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.

However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.

Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.

In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

This beer has a fantastic amber color and a good head, though it disappears fast. The aroma is slightly fruity. And the flavor is fantastic with hints of oranges and a slight sweetness ending of with a fantastic bitterness from a great sort of hop. Nothing less than a fantastic beer.

Sampled 2000: Possibly the best of the Vintages, although sampled at 2 years of age, the 2000 sampled in 2002 reminds me of this one: dark amber, full head, rich raisiny and fruity notes, and dark earthy hopping. Creamy and smooth palate. Such a beautiful beer.

Sampled Christmas 2002. This beer is aging wonderfully. Nice caramel and fruity aroma and flavor, with herbal and spicy hop notes, and a med bitter finish. Balanced and smooth. It just disappears from the glass. Nice dark amber color with full head, long lasting, and heavy lacing left in the glass. Update Feb 2004: This beer may be passing its prime. I tend to like these at 2-3 years, and as its approaching 4 years, I'm getting an increase in sherry notes, a slight tang, and expectedly reduced hops (but still present). Fruity esters are still apparent. Still, I'd say to start drinking these up now.

[Keg] Amber color, beautiful creamy head. Simple aroma. Better than the bottled version, of course, with some improved hop character, but still unimpressive, and pretty watery, only the palate is correct.

Run of the mill porter, no strong caramel or chocolate tones, but fuller bodied (hence the name!) and mild!

Good bitter, oaky beer. Didn''t record notes about this beer, but I do remember it to be rather good!

Nose gives honey and honey again. First tasting impression: very watery, thinnish. Only a bit honey retronasal, no real sweetness. There is some fruitiness at the side of the tongue - could as well be passionfruit as cranberry as anything else - but the fruitiness gets more obvious after a few sips. Some floral bitterness (low-alpha''s?). Could do better.

Finally, i was about to experience one of the Fullers Vintage Ales. Stylish bottle. The pouring, maybe the beer is a little bit too cold served, but there is hardly any lacing. Nice copper color though. Aroma of fruits, roasted malts, very good. Reminded me of a barley wine style. Taste is malty, fruity, complex. Lingering palate. Good stuff!
