Established in 1845
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Very competent Pale Ale. Pours a nice amber color with a medium off-white head. Distinctly bitter hops aroma. Biting hops flavor with little malt to counteract, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It did seem slightly unbalanced though. I'd like to try this on draught some day. Overall though this is another winner from Fuller's.

Bright amber; chewy, malty, earthy, touch of hop. Like the others, but with youth on its side compared with the usual year or two that most people put on these before they drink them.

Reddish gold color with a thin head. Hops very present in the aroma, but not so much in the flavor. As a matter of fact this was much more malty than I was expecting given the tart hoppy aroma. The flavor was uncharacteristically malt imbued. It may have been off the mark for the typical IPA but it was still a good beer. The fact that I scored a case of these for $12 didn't hurt either.

Bottle. Rich amber color. Aroma has a refined fruity hop smell. Some bitter and malt aromas arise as well, very inviting. No head. Nose hits the back of the palate immediately with a rich buttery brown bread flavor. Bitter notes on the finish that leave notes of hops on the palate as well. Very Complex. A very soft but rich, bitter beer. Body is medium-full and flavor does not dissipate quickly. I enjoy this ESB more than any Ive tried thus far as it does not have as sharp or crisp an appeal, but a more round, understated bitterness. As it warmed, wonderful caramel tones presented themselves, while the body seemed to diminish some. To my surprise and vast, vast enjoyment, the beer now tasted like a perfect mix of an English Srong, an Amber and a Bitter. Easily one of my favorite beers. Rerate. Had this on tap and I detected alot of sour notes that were not pleasant. What to make of this, hmm, I have had this on tap at other places and it has had no trace of sourness. Slightly bad batch?must be.

Amber colour, thick collar of foam. Wonderful hop and malt aroma; it’s very complex and surprisingly persistent; getting warmer it develops some wallnut notes, lovely. Powerful body, malty, sweet in the beginning but well balanced, soon, by the hop, that introduces to a very good, quite long, not too much bitter final. It gets better while getting warmer, loosing a strange unfinished/metallic sensation; but the hopping is worth this (expensive) brew.I simply love the perfect marriage of hop and barley in the mouth.

The aroma is sweeter, with fudge; the taste is more mellow, honeyish, with sweet nuts and a lot of sweet caramel.

Rerate 1/30/03: While still one of my favorite beers, I am adjusting the score down a bit. 7/11/02 (4.7): Every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I hit the jackpot when Andy's North Campus sent an e-mail that they had cases of this for $11.99. Excellent roasted aroma with hints of chocolate. Rich, dark color with a thin head. Hearty coffee/chocolate flavor that neither dissipated nor overpowered. One of the best beers I have tried.

Bottle. Deep Red-Mahogany color. Short, Burnt Off-white head that disappears fairly rapidly. Sweet chocolate, plum/raisin aroma. Initial taste is a rich, chocolate flavor with very even dark roast coffee undertones that strike with a not-too-bitter pleasant appeal. As it goes down has a caramel/hop taste that hits the back of the palate, providing for a full English ale flavor. Finish has a roasted-copper appeal that lingers, with nutty overtones as it warms. Carbonation is not a problem in the bottle. Best Porter out there? Quite possibly. Make this stuff unpasteurised and unfiltered and I’d give it a perfect score.
Nitro draught Blah, this was pretty bad, the roastiness shows through, but in a sickly sweet/sour way, with dry chocolate and a weak body, per nitro. Won’t be rating this sample, as this stuff was not meant to be on nitro.

Thick, firm head. Full-bodied. Nice bitter finish...........................

Bottled:
Pours a deep orangey amber colour with a mid sized head. Caramel aroma. Caramel flavour with some vegetable notes. A rather dull and lifeless ale, would love to try it on cask.

Nut brown. Nice hoppy aroma. Sweet, medium bodied, somewhat roasty. Bitter finish. A lovely, well balanced winter ale.
