Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.

However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.

Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.

In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Bottle. Deep Red-Mahogany color. Short, Burnt Off-white head that disappears fairly rapidly. Sweet chocolate, plum/raisin aroma. Initial taste is a rich, chocolate flavor with very even dark roast coffee undertones that strike with a not-too-bitter pleasant appeal. As it goes down has a caramel/hop taste that hits the back of the palate, providing for a full English ale flavor. Finish has a roasted-copper appeal that lingers, with nutty overtones as it warms. Carbonation is not a problem in the bottle. Best Porter out there? Quite possibly. Make this stuff unpasteurised and unfiltered and I’d give it a perfect score.
Nitro draught Blah, this was pretty bad, the roastiness shows through, but in a sickly sweet/sour way, with dry chocolate and a weak body, per nitro. Won’t be rating this sample, as this stuff was not meant to be on nitro.

Standard English ale appearence with chocolate and coffee hints in the aroma and flavour. The beer is good but is slightly over bitter for my taste at times.

Bottled:
Pours a deep orangey amber colour with a mid sized head. Caramel aroma. Caramel flavour with some vegetable notes. A rather dull and lifeless ale, would love to try it on cask.

Nut brown. Nice hoppy aroma. Sweet, medium bodied, somewhat roasty. Bitter finish. A lovely, well balanced winter ale.

Red-brown. Very malty, full bodied, bitter and complex. When tasted side by side with the 1999 vintage this is less vinuous, and still tasted a tad sugary. Neverthe less a great strong ale.

Tasted from cask. pale yellow color. Nice honey and malt aroma and a very malty taste - I would have prefered a bit more hops.

Tried it cask-conditioned. Almost completely black, a faint taste and aroma of licorice together with a light body.

Very uninspiring appearence, but the honey aspect of the beer is reflected in its aroma. The flavour is very acidic which makes it poor on the palate. The honey in my opinion makes the beer difficult to drink.
