About
Founded as the Boulder Brewing Company in 1979 as the first craft brewery in Colorado; it started brewing the following year. In 1990, the company changed its name to Boulder Beer Company. In 1993 the company again renamed itself as the Rockies Brewing Company. In 2005, the company again changed its name back to the Boulder Beer Company.
In January 2020 the brewpub closed but through a new partnership with Sleeping Giant Brewing Company in Denver, who will continue to brew, package and distribute the Boulder Beer brands to the retail market, the brand will stay alive.

Cool to be rater #1, but I didn’t enter this beer. Waxed bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours bright copper with a foamy beige head. Deep inhale provides a brown sugar aroma. There’s some bourbon notes, but dark raisiny fruit seems first. Full bodied. Heat can be imagined, but it’s not serious until it hits the brain. :) There’s very, very nice brown sugar and the wood is mild. The bourbon is also mild, but the whole picture is complicated flavors working well together. Bourbon is ever present, so the finish is bourbon, a little wood, brown sugar and ever lingering dark fruits. Raisins. Not prunes. This is extremely tasty ale.

Bottle. A- Hoppy, citrus, candied fruits, malty, caramel. A- Ruby color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Slightly bitter, malty, sweet fruits. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- This confirms my not so enthusiastic view on Boulder Beer. Maybe I should let this age for a year or two but it was certainly nothing I have experienced with a barleywine before. Lots of hops and malty and just not a lot of excitement in it. Tried pairing it with a cigar which did help it overall though.

Bottle shared at Chriso’s minidig 16/08/2014. Golden orange coloured pour with a halo of white head. Aroma is mineral, nutty malts and some honey on the nose. Nice saison yeast and some orange skin on the nose. Flavour is resin, caramle, saison yeast and honey. Hot alcohol and solvent in the finish. Palate is semi-sweet, heavy on the tongue and highish carbonation. Ok.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours bright copper with a beige head. Aroma is quite resin. Med + body, at least. Flavor is somewhat roasty malt with a lot of resin. Gets some earthiness in the finish. Strong flavors, bitter finish. Good stuff.

Purchased a 650 ml bottle from Craft Beer Cellar, Portsmouth. Color is pitch black with fast dying head leaving nothing in its wake. Aroma is lingering pine hops with mild chocolate, mild ash.
The body is medium with a dry roasted finish. Resinous hops pretty much dominated the other flavors that are here. Traces of caramel, baker’s cocoa with weak floral notes. My overall thoughts… it’s a pine bomb and hard to get the other flavors but for the 9.5% it drinks rather well.

On draught at Winking Lizard. The beer is a brownish-amber color with a medium creamy light beige head that dissipates gradually. Sticky small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of grainy malt, fruit and hops. Medium body with flavors of overripe fruit, stale malt and grassy hops. The finish is mildly bitter with a short piney hops aftertaste. Barely average overall.

Bottle shared at chriso’s Post-GBBF 2014 Tasting - London. Pours clear brown with a bubbly, off-white head. Cheap chocolate on the nose, soft roast. Light sweet flavor with dark bread, artificial chocolate, burnt sugars. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sugary dark malts to finish with more fake cocoa character. Not awesome.

Bottle shared at chriso’s Post-GBBF 2014 Tasting - London. Pours perfectly clear, bright amber-gold with a frothy white head. The nose holds some doughy bread, light toffee. Very, very sweet, with toasted sugars, yeasty bread, candi sugars and old oranges. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Super sugary finish with grains, candi sugar, yeast and doughy wheat. So so.
