Description
Hope Brewery opened in 2014, and kicked off their range with a whole lot of hoppy ales, distinctively recognisable by their black cans and amp design - a homage to Hope's love of music. Since then they've been satisfying a desire for new beers and new styles including NEIPAs, sours, trophy-winning stouts and even Australia's strongest IPA.

(Can) Pours black with a short-lived small loose chocolate brown head. Lovely aroma with notes of dark toffee, alcohol, dried fruit. Full bodied, thick, sticky with modest but lovely fine bright carbonation. Amazing taste. It’s quite sweet, and the alcohol is clearly pleasant. These two work together well like a fortified wine. The sweetness has dark toffee / burnt sugar notes to it, giving some relieving bitter notes. There’s notes of raisins. An extraordinary beer - that’s a lot of alcohol in a single can - not for quaffing!

375ml can into tulip. Nose somehow replicates the weird 'fake orange' smell of the original Sunny Boy. Also some alcohol. Orange/amber beer with a thin white head that dissipates. High fine carbonation. Tastes like sharp sweet orange juice, finish is very tart. Refreshingly eye-opening. Alcohol not really obvious.

Can. Amber with a large white head that fades to an inch quickly but then lasts OK. Aroma of bread, caramel, cloves. Maybe a bit of the fizzy side. Not all that sweet with almost a biscuity feel to the malt side of things. Not much banana but lots of cloves towards a finish that's bitter enough to shut the door. Has real presence but I wouldn't have guessed anything like 9% ABV.

From a 375ml can on 13/11/2020. Pours a large;y clear red/amber with with a small head. The nose is a bit malty, with some biscuit, along with some dark fruit and a slight sharpness at the back. Taste wise, it has some caramel, lots of sweet citrus and stone fruit, and even a hint of stewed apple, followed by big, sticky resiny hops and a hint of warming, lingering booze. The mouthfeel is syrupy, the carbonation softish. I thought the Jet Black was good, but this is propably a touch better, and certainly much better than the Rhino. A really well balanced and tasty red sipper. Would definitely happily have again.

Can. There's pineapple everywhere here. That's dangerous, but the beast is corraled skillfully and the result is an intesnse sour with just enough going on to be exciting.

From a 375ml can on 11/9/2020. Pours a clearish deep golden (not very red) with a small to medium head. Has an interesting spicy aroma with some dark fruit notes. The taste is unusual some caramel malt and sweet plummy fruit. Finishes with a moderate spicy bitterness, with a slight, sharp tang, which lingers in the mouth. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Seems more rye IPA than red IPA to be honest, but goes down quite nicely.

Can. Red, no head. Definitely blueberries here, on nose and in glass. Certainly sour, while also almost sickly sweet. Delivers on promise.

Can. Deep golden. Fair bit of citrus on nose, Much pinier in the mouth, which is what I was looking for. Perhaps a little too sweet.

From a 375ml can on 6/8/2020. Pours a clear medium golden with bugger all head (what's with all these crystal clear NEIPAs?). The nose features some dank tropical and stone fruit. Flavour follows suit, with medium sweet tropical and stone fruit and a mild spicy bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A more than decent NEIPA.

Can of the new 2020 version (Sabro). Yes it's hazy, but not really juicy. This showcases Sabro very effectively. Coconut abounds, with mango in the background, and a pretty hefty hop afterburn. Impressive.
