Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

Bottle clear light golden/yellow, with a white frothy head. Light malt aroma, with a touch of lemon in the hop notes. Light bodied and clean. Fairly hoppy but not very bitter. Definitely a baby IPA...maybe a west coast Pilsner

12 oz bottle from Super 1 in CDA, ID. Aroma consists of chalky candy, floral notes, perfume, pine--all fairly faint. Pours pale hazy yellow with a medium white fluffy head with decent retention. Taste is bittersweet, but less emphasis on bitter; citrusy. Highly carbonated with a medium to thin body. Nice, simple beer. Is what it set out to be.

12oz bottle. Filtered yellow-orange-tan body. Thin white head. Mellow citrus rind, tropical apricot nuances in the aroma. This is on the thinner side of the equation for a Session IPA, more hoppy Golden Ale. Still quite enjoyable. Some soapy green bitterness in the finish. Not the best Session IPA out there, but still a tasty venture.

Bottle: Light golden yellow in color with a finger of white head. Nose is lightly citrus and floral with a heavy malty sweetness. Easy drinking, no ‘off’ flavors. Malty with light citrus and florals. Can this and it’s an outdoorsman’s best friend.

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. I love coming here, such a quality atmosphere. Popped the cork to watch Friday play at The Masters. Huge pop, thankfully no gushing. Sparkling golden pour with a modest white head that dies back real fast. Light ring throughout. Nose is sweet with seemingly apple cider notes, light florals and barnyard with faint yeast. Smooth. A balance taste of sweet (apple), malt, and yeast. Very minimal florals. Finishes dry, but soothing. The 11% is well hidden.

Bottle. A- Wheat, subtle spices, subtle lemon. A- Golden color, clear liquid, white head. T- Wheat, grains, malty, subtle spice, slight lemon and citrus notes. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, abrupt finish. O- Just a standard wheat ale. Nothing really going on for it. I wouldn’t turn it down but I wouldn’t avidly seek it out either. It would be fine to drink on a hot summer day, but just sort of bland to be quite honest. I think it would be better unfiltered.

Clear pale gold with pretty much no head - looks like a crappy pale lager - nose is fairly simple - just some green hoppiness with no malt character to speak of - flavor is pretty simple - lightly crackery, crisp, malt character, with some notes of straw, cracked grains - crisp finish with moderate hop greenness and moderate bitterness - simple, but enjoyable enough, with no real flaws to speak of - it’s really more of a lightly hoppy golden ale than a session IPA, but I would reach for it again on a really hot day.

12oz bottle. I was hoping for a lot but literally felt robbed. Pale golden color with a decent head. Watery lifeless malts kill the beer because I taste nothing but resinous dirty green hops. Not a fun hop character, astringently hoppy with no roundness. This beer may be too deconstructed. I like low abv and clean hoppiness but this tastes like a filtered down version of a good IPA.

Bottle pour. Pours a clear pale yellow with a patchy head. This is a very light beer. Some hoppy, grassy aroma with a little citrus fruit. Light taste with corn, grass, and hops. All flavor is mild. This is an average beer. Not much stands out. Very easy drinking at least. Had a couple times now. Not a bad session.
