Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.
The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

Can. Nice enough, caramel maltiness, light hoppiness, bit of citrus. Alright.

12 ounce can from Woodman's Appleton, 6/23/19. Woot, a Montana tick! #25. Hazy orange, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of leafy, floral, resin, grapefruit, toasted malt. Taste is resin, grapefruit, and herbal note, almost floral, pale malt. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness. Nice beer.

Bottle, many thanks HuskerTan! Clear brown color with beige head. Aroma is chocolate, milk chocolate, cocoa powder, simple but good. Taste is chocolate, a touch earthy, mineraly, with a fairly dry, almost chalky finish. Oily, a bit mineraly, mouthfeel with natural carbonation. Good one!

[12oz bottle from Total Wines, Brea, CA.] An opaque brown beer with a ring of white head; malty aroma; quite dry in the mouth to start, then a peppery burn with some heat and a chocolatey body; before an unusually dry finish. Not a cloying as many brown ales.

On tap at Big Sky, pours an opaque cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is very dank and yeasty, with plenty of pot-like hops, yeast soup, and biscuity malt. Flavour is everything I don't like about this style, with dank hops, yeast soup, chalk, and harsh bitterness. Can't appreciate this. Bitter and yeasty. Poor.

On cask at Big Sky, pours a cloudy dull yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of lime upfront, with a touch of cucumber and gentle lacto. Flavour is very fuzzy and obscured, with lime and a touch of lacto. This one fails to pronounce the cucumber in a way that would I'd want. Pretty lame.
