The story of Parkway Brewing Company is a love story, a story that embodies the American Dream, a story of do-it-yourself determination, a story that continues on an exciting journey- much like the scenic highway for which Parkway Brewing is named. Two couples with a dream: a Master Brewer with a scientist’s brain and an artist’s palate, a visionary instigator with a dogged determination and their two creative and clever wives saw craft beer culture exploding across the nation and wanted to bring it home to the mountains of SW Virginia.
Since opening in 2013 on Kessler Mill Road in tiny Salem, Virginia, Parkway Brewing Company has not only created some of the state’s tastiest brews, but we’ve created a place that has brought together a community of like-minded, free-spirited beer lovers with a penchant for the great outdoors.

From my father: pours near black with beige head. Aroma is dark chocolate, some coffee. More American porter than it is Eastern European in the nose. Taste is robust, roasty, not very sweet, lightly bitter. Good and smooth body.

Bottle from my father: pours copper with a white head. Aroma is grapefruit, light pine, some maltiness. Taste is somewhat bitter, with malt backbone. Not bad.

Deep amber and bronze coloured body, all with a nice single centimetre tall tan head that fades quickly, and produces an amazing copper glow when held to a light. Aroma of metal, malt, toast, grains, earth, light funk and a dash of caramelised sugars and nuts. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong rich nutty and earthy grain shines through at first with a pungent caramel and sweet flavour that has a touch of spice towards the end, as well, all with a slight vegetal flavour at the end. Aftertaste shows a grainy bite with bunches of nuts and earth throughout and a slightly pungent bitterness from the grain and light Peaty flavours that dominate the finish and don't produce much sweetness at all. Overall, a decent enough doppelbock, but a touch thin and simplistic - the earthy and nutty flavours make this not complex enough, for the style or otherwise. Nice to try though, especially on tap and during the season. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 04-November-2019 for US$6,00.

I can be on board with the name, even though I'm just a Dad, i'm a dad to three under seven years old. Aroma of blueberries (of course), grass, floral notes and a dash of light lactose and subtle malts/wheat elements. Light-bodied; Sharp tart blueberry and grassy flavour with a herbal and soured flavour that goes down easily and is only left with a bit of the wheat and softer tart fruit that has an acidic flavour with the lactose and alcohol coming through at the very end. Aftertaste shows a more refined and super easy-drinking malt/wheat profile with only a bit of the tart fruit that has cherries and apples pairing with the ever-present blueberries making this nice throughout and very simplistic. Overall, a dry and grainy finish that has some sugars, but really this is all about the tart fruit and a bit about the alcohol and lactose finishes that are a touch strong. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 20-September-2019 for US$2,49 sampled just over a year later on 23-September-2019.
