Description
We love our home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and we love the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 469 mile scenic journey of mountainous wonder that showcases the natural beauty and unique heritage of our region. Beautiful vistas, distinctive music, oddball characters and fantastical folklore are just a few of the things that make our home a special place. It’s enough to make a person mighty thirsty.
The story of Parkway Brewing Company is a love story, a story that embodies the American Dream, a story of do-it-yourself determination, a story that continues on an exciting journey- much like the scenic highway for which Parkway Brewing is named. Two couples with a dream: a Master Brewer with a scientist’s brain and an artist’s palate, a visionary instigator with a dogged determination and their two creative and clever wives saw craft beer culture exploding across the nation and wanted to bring it home to the mountains of SW Virginia.
Since opening in 2013 on Kessler Mill Road in tiny Salem, Virginia, Parkway Brewing Company has not only created some of the state’s tastiest brews, but we’ve created a place that has brought together a community of like-minded, free-spirited beer lovers with a penchant for the great outdoors.

Hazy golden and copper coloured body with a relatively fast-dying tan head, only a centimetre tall. Aroma of crisp lemons, light bready and biscuity malt and a touch of grain, all with a good hop Aroma of resin and pine. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour with a bunch of biscuits and lighter malt noticeable, coupled with some sugars from caramel and crisp melons and ending with a robust and relatively pungent herbal hoppy bite at the end. Aftertaste is deep with the good balance of malt and hops and ending with a distinct lager yeast and pleasant hop bitterness from herbal and grassy notes. Overall, a very nice lager that almost drinks like an Ale, but with plentiful hops and a great balance throughout. Great to sample on draught and worth trying if you can find it, fresh, especially. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 10-August-2017 for US$5,00 sampled at the end of my driveway!

12oz bottle. Poured a kind of hazy dark orange color with a small white head. Aroma was light green coffee notes. Some sweet malts. Light green pepper notes. Flavor was light sweet malts, not a lot of coffee, just a little bit. Coffee is not overdone, which is nice.

$1.99 bottle from Whole Foods. Pours murky golden with a small, actually tiny, white head. Smells of cracker, cereal, yeast, only a hint of fruit. Flavor is definitely better than the aroma. Much fruitier, with banana and I almost want to say kiwi. Minor spice notes. Not bad.

Rich and hazy deep brown and chocolatey copper coloured body with a faint tan head that fades very quickly. Aroma of pit fruits, figs, earth, bourbon, tequilla, oak, vanilla and a lot of caramelised sugar notes. Medium-bodied; Rich sweetness at first from all the sugar, pit fruits and caramel, but also a ton of the barrel flavours coming through with bourbon, alcohol, tequilla, rum, oak, vanilla and even some anise notes in the mix. Aftertaste is very boozy with a lot of grain and toffee and earth notes around with little else. Overall, a nice rich beer, full of flavour with a ton of barrel elements, just not much of anything else and shows more than 11,1% abv, which is saying something, but still nice to try on tap! I sampled this ten ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 06-April-2017 for US$5,00 sampled at the end of my driveway!
