Description
Welcome to the page of Brouwerij-Stokerij Pirlot. actively brewing and distilling quality beverages since 1998.

0,75l bottle at home shared by 4. As Kempisch Vuur Haverstout Reserva. BB 06.09.2018. Bottled 3 years before BB date. dark brown color, small tan head. smells of coconut, nutty, marzipan, bit citric, some wood. very nice smell. medium to full body, medium carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of coconut, bit ashy, light peat, wood, some grape notes, nutty, marzipan, lightly sour. finishes lightly sour and lightly peaty with notes of grapes, light green apples and some marzipan. interesting experiment but also a bit weird, dont like the peat notes on this one. overall quite nice though.

As Kempisch Vuur Winter with blue label, which is apparently the same thing as Kerstvuur. Bottle from Wijnegemse Drankenhal. Way too soon for a Christmas beer, but why not... Medium thick, lightly lacing, off-white head retaining as a creamy rim around the edge and in a thin greyish veil on top of a hazy, orangey peach blonde beer with dots of proteins floating throughout - clearly an older bottle (best before October 2017 though). Adding the sediment unsurprisingly brings no relief, as the beer becomes very murky, a deep ochre-tinged brownish orange, like the content of a rain pool on a malm-rich soil. Aroma of allspice, coriander seed, apricot, fried egg, white rum, candied banana, gingerbread, butterscotch, toast, peach, stewed beef (the proteins at work), ginger root, cooked pumpkin, bubblegum, soggy sandwiches, red apple, cloves, glue, some fusel alcohols. Sweet onset, estery, hints of candied fig, peach and banana with an apple-like crispness and gooseberry sourishness somewhere, quite some residual candi sugar sweetness but not cloying, spritzy carbonation (in fact overcarbonated even for the style) with a souring and coarsening effect but dramatically settling down after a while, alcohol and spices becoming (way too) apparent at a very early stage over a caramelly and very lightly nutty malt basis, gaining strength towards the end, very phenolic (cloves but solvent-like as well, to the point where it becomes obnoxious), some deep earthy hop bitterness, a truckload of soapy, sweetish, perfumey spices (mostly star aniseed and coriander I suppose), some bready and - with sediment - even ’beefy’ yeastiness, and (more than anything else) a very astringent and tiring rum-like alcohol dominance, heating and leaving a very wry effect on the root of the tongue, overpowering all the rest. Not so much a Scotch ale-based Belgian Christmas beer, lighter in colour and in that sense almost a Belgian barley wine if such a thing exists, so still sweet and (over)spiced. Regardless of (sub)style: this is clearly a messy, rather unpleasant brew, looking unattractive from the start, overspiced, totally unbalanced and, most of all, way too alcoholic, though this astringent effect softens with adding the sediment. A failure from both a technical and a conceptual point of view, at least the bottle I got; one of the most ill-fated Belgian Christmas beers I ever had to gobble up, near to drain pour, actually. Sorry mr. Pirlot!

Belgian blonde spiced with juniper berries. Irregular, moussy, snow white, stable head on top of a hazy yellow golden beer with ’old gold’ hue and a ’mist’ of yeast throughout. Aroma indeed carries a lot of unmistakable juniper berry (reminiscent of ’oude jenever’), next to impressions of raw celery or even lettuce, straw, banana, green apple (acetaldehyde), white bread, field flowers, vague nutmeg somewhere, unripe pear. Fruity onset, estery with hints of pear, green banana and unripe apricot but in all fairly ’clean’, subtly sweetish with a sourish edge, softish carbonation, lean and supple body, bit grainy middle with bready maltiness at its core, before the juniper berries take over and yield an aromatic retronasal spiciness which cannot be mistaken for anything else - almost like green cypress needles. Restrained ’green’ banana sweetishness and bready malt sweetishness continue underneath and a dash of floral, slightly spicy hops add late but effective bitterness. Not being a fan of juniper berries and having experienced exaggerated spiciness in some other Kempisch Vuur beers, I was dreading this one a bit, to be honest, but it turns out okay: if you must make a Belgian blonde ale with spices, then at least make sure it is technically flawless, and that is exactly what has been achieved here. I will never be fond of juniper aromas but other than that, this is a decent beer and delivers exactly what it claims. And fortunately it has no real jenever flavor other than the juniper berry effect, because I sincerely hate jenever.

Bottle (from beliguminabox). Pours dark brown-black with beige brownish head. The head stays. Aroma is fruity, malty, dark plums, metallic notes. Flavor is sour and bitter, vinous, dark plums, oak, malt. Finish is sour and bitter with some alcohol. Overall: ok, but feels a lot more like ok Belgian strong ale, than imperial stout (current style in rb).
