Description
The Abita Brewing Company is nestled in the piney woods 30 miles north of New Orleans. In its first year, the brewery produced 1,500 barrels of beer. We had no idea what we started. Customers loved our beer! By 1994, we outgrew the original site (now our 100-seat brew pub) and moved up the road to a larger facility to keep up with demand.

We brew more than 125,000 barrels of beer and 13,500 barrels of soda of in our state-of-the-art brewing facility. Our lagers and ales are brewed in small batches, hand-crafted by a team of dedicated workers with only the highest ideals of quality. This pride, along with our brewing process, is what creates our great brews.

We are privately owned and operated by local shareholders, many who have been with us since day one.

This very much reminds me of Dixie Blackened Voodoo, but maybe a bit better. I'm not too sure about that "chocolate-toffee" flavor. It may be there, but it is very slight. This has a nice, roasty finish, even if it doesn't linger on the palate as long as I would like.

Copper colored with a rather thick head. Faint malt aroma. The flavor was unfortunately rather bland and there is no risk of it offending anyone. I like to be challenged a tad more by a beer that touts being a micro-brew on their label.

This is an ale? I found it to be rather schwarzbier like. Chocolatey with a little spice and maybe even some licorice. Fairly German. Its mild and clean qualities esp made me think it was a lager (or at least lagered). Fairly light-bodied and almost watery - but not really. But it doesn't have the mouthfeel of porter or stout. Perhaps some hints of metallic flavors...similar to Dixie Blackened Voodoo. Re-rate with higher numbers, and the funny thing is I still think of it as a light schwarzbier, oscura, dunkel or other dark German lager. My notes from the session: Brown with red, til its almost purple. Full foamy head. Mild notes of cocoa, caramel and weak coffee in the nose. Pleasing cocoa/coffee flavor with dry clean finish. This is a pretty nice oscura. Easy drinking.

Light amber; refreshing, but artificial raspberry character. Standard stuff.
