Description
When we started making brilliant, innovative beer back in 1983, the craft beer thing was just a glint in Harvie’s eye. Now, more than 35 years later, we are proud to be the forefathers of this movement to better beer. Harviestoun is a proud, family-run business, our Chairmen Sandy Orr and Donald MacDonald champion a dedication to the craft that produces award-winning, natural brews made using the finest ingredients and purest Scottish water.

Founded in 1983 by Ken Brooker, the Scottish brewery has grown steadily to become renowned for their award winning beers. Head brewer, Stuart Cail, joined Harviestoun in 1995. Over the years the brewery has found new and innovative ways to create truly unique beers from their whisky cask aged Old Engine Oil to Bitter and Twisted, aged in Gin and Pinot Noir barrels.

A vigorous pour produced a nice thick head of medium brown which coated the glass and ran off in sheets rather than breaking into a lace. The head disappated quickly, but gave off aromas of licorice, raisins and Scotch Whisky. Complex flavor. Sweet, smoky, not too bitter. A touch of sourness in the aftertaste. Lighter on the tongue than I would have guessed from the name. Interesting and enjoyable.

Bottle Pours very dark. Black with red highlights Virtually no head, barely enough to make any lacing at all. You can really smell the Whiskey barrells in this one. Very sweet, molassas, cherry maybe also. Taste is great. Sweet, coffee, molassas, brown sugar, little if any hops dark but not charcoalish. The whiskey cask flavor really comes through here too. Feel is soft and easy. No bite to it. Just nice. Terriffic brew. Glad I can get it around here.

Bottle Pours very dark, nearly black with a small deep tan head. Very little lacing as well. Looks like a stout. Served it to cold maybe.Aroma is of sweet dark chocolate and grape jelly. Coffe as well but the sweetnes barely lets it out. Taste is coffee, licorice and burnt wood up front, then the coffee and charcoal comes through. Lacking the harsh bitterness of dry or imperial stouts. Palate is awsome. Feels like it should pour like motor oil. Thick heavy smooth. Little or no bitter aftertaste. Very yummy. Like a sweet porter.

Flowery hop nose with some fruitiness - bitter with a twist all right, with a lovely, light, bready, slightly sweet maltiness that balances well - dry and quite drinkable - good but not great.

Hazy blond color. Very nice and original aroma: malt, hop, fruits and flowers, weeds from wild fields as I remember from my childhood; a bit cheesy. Malty with a very nice bitterness (aromatic as well). Is this a lager? I want more!

Sampled cask conditioned at Oliver Twist, Stockholm.
Pale golden, slightly hazy, rich head. Rich aroma of citrus and hay. Dry and light bodied with soft and light mouthfeel. Hoppy finish with good bitterness. Thirst quenching. Another to top effort from the Dollar brewery.

Opaque black. Brown whipped cream-like head. Barley-wine type sweet and malty aroma. Good mouthfeel: sweet and same time hoppy. Gives nice bitter aftertaste. Not too heavy-bodied, which makes this easy to drink. (8/5/7/4/16 4.0)
Re-rate, bottled
Rich, wineous and malty aroma. Sweetish and robut - rounded mouthfeel. Great. (8/5/7/5/17 4.2)

Jet black pour with a fluffy, off-white head - strikingly tart aroma, with hints of chocolate and quite a strong presence of the scotch barrel it was aged in (wood and all) - this tastes both just like I expected, and not like I expected at all - I anticipated a strong chocolate flavor with a scotch presence, but I never thought those flavors would mix like this - tartness moves in initially, then the chocolate moves in, generating a bitter-sweet flavor - the scotch is quite evident in the flavor - it doesn’t seem to blend well at first, but boy does it grow on you - notes of port creep in to seduce the tongue (and they succeed) - some dark fruit and slight vinous qualities - takes some getting used to, but it’s worth the effort.

Fresh grassy hop aroma. Off-white white creamy head with big bubbles and some lace. Clear copper color. As expected very hoppy taste but bitterness come just in the finish, very interesting and complex bitter (has to sample cask conditioned someday ...)! (8/4/8/4/17 4.1)
Re-rated: Bottled (BB 09/2005)
Clear dark golden color and nice steady white head. Grassy flowery hop aroma. Well-balanced crisp mouthfeel with good late bitterness. One of my favourite UK beers. (7/3/7/5/15 3.7)
