Description
Renaissance brewing was established in 2005 when experienced brewers Andy Deuchars and Brian Thiel purchased the lease on the historic Grove Mill in Blenheim. Andy and Brian, both natives of Southern California, had one goal in mind - to produce stunning beers in a region more renowned for the excellence of its wines. We are committed to using local ingredients and are one of the pioneers of craft brewing in New Zealand.

500ml Bottle from Costco courtesy of Ray. Renaissance Perfection English Pale Ale 5%. Served in a pint glass. It pours an exceedingly clear copper gold with a thin head of off-white foam. It has a really nice lemony sweet malt aroma, very appetizing. Medium to light bodied with a scratchy carbonation. The taste is not bad, earthy, sweet, lemony hops and fairly balanced. Nowhere near as cloyingly sweet as I usually get from an English IPA - pretty good. One of Renaissance’s better beers.

Paradox Pilsner bottle. It pours a deep gold with a big soapy head of foam and a bready malt aroma, lemony hop notes and an earthy pine bark-ish hop character. The beer is light bodied with some crackery malts and that pine bark bitterness I don’t terribly care if it’s for. OK.

Bottle shared by Ray. Voyager IPA. An orange copper color with a thin fizzy head. The nose is musty one with some fruits. The taste is malty sweet caramel with some buttery character and a pleasing green pine needle bitter finish. Meh, ok.

Bottle from The Beerhive and (18 months later) keg at The Hanging Bat. Hazy amber body with a medium off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pineapple, wood and caramel. Flavour of resin, kiwi fruit, earth tangy lime and a hint of mint. Medium body with an oily texture. Prickly fizz. Easy drinking for the strength but lacking a bit of punch.
