We pour our hearts into our passionate pursuit of bottle-conditioned farmhouse ales. Fall in love with our special beers —extraordinary is at the heart of what we do best!
Located in Marquette, Michigan, we’re solely focus on crafting world-class farmhouse and barrel-aged real ale. Our name reflects the intersection of Old-World process with New-World taste and premium ingredients.
Not just another craft brewery…
Michigan is home to over 300 craft breweries. So, why do we need another one? Here are four ways that Barrel + Beam is different:
Family of Ales
Barrel + Beam opened in January 2018 as the region’s lone farmhouse ales brewery; a genre that allows a range of flavors, textures and nuance grounded by dry drinkability.
Michigan Sourced Ingredients
The Great Lakes State could just as well be called The Great Fruit State. Michigan grown apples, peaches, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, among others, find their place in our seasonal and limited releases. The growth in Michigan’s hop, malt and brewer’s yeast industries, combined with our freshwater, has allowed for 100% Michigan sourced ale to be crafted. Ale with pure Michigan terroir is a cornerstone of Barrel + Beam.
Oak Aging
Aging in oak wine barrels provides the ultimate environment for house culture to thrive and produce the most refreshing, complex and distinct ales. Many of our ales spend a year or longer in oak, often with an addition of Michigan fruit.
Bottle Conditioning
This finishing touch is the only way to ensure fine, Champagne-like carbonation and perfectly soft foam when poured. Like wine, beer that is bottle conditioned often gets better with time.
On tap at HopCat Livonia. Pours a pale hazy yellow-white with a white head. Light pear and apple in the aroma, yeasty. Flavor is smooth pear, yeaasty, with a very light tartness or funk. Solid all around.
Aromas are cranberries, apples, dust and a bit of funk. Flavors are similar to nose, mostly dry but with a bit of fruit in back. Add in Band-Aids. Body is a touch thin. Meh.

Undated 375mL bottle drunk 12/25/23. Gently cloudy, light cherry-rose. Rapidly fizzling, pinkish head. Real nice poopy-bretty nose. Love that funky barnyard with nicely macerated, floral and spice from the cherry. Low oak, low sugar. Bit of oak tannin, lots of Brett and funky barnyard with no aggressive acidity. Lingering Brett acids, tons of funk, cherry skin and light pit. Could use a touch more malt depth and tighter carbination, but it's a fairly minor quibble. Love the culture they've used, the dryness and the maceration of the fruit.
Aromas and flavors are kind of a cross between traditional European saison and Bavarian hefeweitzen. Bittersweet with some yeasty astringency, cloves and bananas.
Kind of a pinkish orange translucent color with a very short lived fizzy head. Aromas are Brett, mild cherry and a little bit of machine oil. Flavors are similar to nose, slightly more tart than sweet, again mild. On the thin side with okay carbonation.
Capped 12.7 ounce can from Niemuth's, 9/7/23. Hazy amber, large white head, average retention. Aroma of funk, earth, sweet berry. Taste is sweet and tart berry, pepper, funk, oak. Well balanced, bright. Solid.
Can from Barrel + Beam. Pours a blueberry skin ruby, purple color with a finger of off-white foam that lingers. Blackberry skin, horseblanket and funk on the nose. Palate is similar with more berry skin, mineral, oak and horseblanket underneath. Drying finish with a natural carbonation vibe. Enjoyable.
