Broughton Ales is a brewery in Broughton, in the Scottish Borders. The brewery was founded in 1979 by David Younger and James Collins in Broughton village and was the first initiated Scottish microbrewery. Broughton produces traditional cask conditioned beer, bottled beer and keg beer.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.9%. Malts are pale ale and roasted barley, hops are Perle, First Gold and Magnum. Mahogany colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, toffee and some caramel, hints of burnt breadcrumbs. Flavour of malts, brown bread and a little caramel, hints of roasted nuts, prunes and mild coffee. Moderate earthy hops in the finish.

Bottle at home from the little shop in the next village and a very strange find. Had it as part of my homemade advent calendar. Good pour and a sweet malt aroma. And the taste was just all sweet malts. Too sweet for me and it was a drain pour. Not worth the units.

Cask at Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen. It pours pretty much black with a thick, dense tan head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, charred, earthy, burnt toast, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, malt loaf and coffee beans. The taste is firmly dry, bitter, dark roasted malt, charred, coffee beans, light acidity, umami, liquorice, dark chocolate, cacao nibs and slightly ashy with a dark roasted finish.
