Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Pours clear gold into an English pint. Creamy white head with medium retention recedes leaving no lacing. Hay and corn aromas. Medium bodied with wet straw, sourdough, and mild crunch n munch. Still a step above a screamer... those were some tough morning afters...

Can pour into nonic pint glass from Redstone Liquors, Stoneham. Appearance is hazy dark, dark brown (mahogany with light source directly behind) with tons of sparkle, finger-width foamy light brown head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, roasted coffee, lactose, dead leaves and milder baker's chocolate. Taste is toasted malts and lactose with spare coffee and chocolate; late nuts. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with a somewhat watery texture, soft carbonation with late lively kick and finish as taste. Overall, as noted previously, pretty amazing for 3.3%. That's only notable in the texture as it a bit watery but good in its own right and quite impressive for such a low ABV.

On tap at Birreria Volo, pours a deep dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out bready malt, some herbaceous notes, and a hint of toasted caramel. Flavour is pretty much identical, with lots of bready malt and a herbaceous quality. This doesn't stack up to Czech polotmavys, but it's nice to see the ambition. Okay.
