Description
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

2006 bottle I believe, shared by OldGrowth on 7/6/06.
Orange-amber with some lighter gold-yellow tints, soft and easygoing on the eyes. Fluffy white head is not terribly long retained (but it’s not bottle conditioned, so it’s not surprising), but does leave some patchy lace.
Spicy, dry fruits bombard the nose, as very soft, well-attenuated honeyish malts soften things. Dry grains, lightly biscuity sit on the end, stiffly. The rye is perfumey and equally drying. Dry, dry, dry! And hoppy. Fruity, floral but not too bitter, just crisp and challenging.
The flavor is pilsener-like, or reminds me of one, anyway. Dry, with straw-like graininess, light honey drizzled about and with light, crisp, hops that pepper the palate pleasingly. No heavy caramel, sweet base sugars or breadiness here. Just highly attenuated malts that provide moderate body. The rye works wonders as it keeps the perceived dryness level high and adds a perfumey, challenging touch of fruity/spiciness to the mix. Carbonation, though artificial, is actually quite appropriate, feeling more like a quenching lager than a soft ale.
This must be just absolutely mind-blowing fresh on draught. The day that Terrapin finds a bottle-conditioned line of bottles is the day I move to Georgia! Thanks Tom (and Larry)! My score is a bit of a mix between the bottle (which has its problems with filtration/carbonation) and what I expect this beer would be without the filtration/force carbonation. Damn you Fredricks!

Thanks to goldtwins for this bottle - cloudy orange pour with minimal head - woody aroma, with a mild sweetness and abundant citrus fruits (mostly oranges, and a touch fo grapefruit), and a hint of tropical fruit, too (mainly apricot) - this lacks the killer bitterness most associated with the style, but I think that is to this beers advantage, because it allows the other flavors that are so underappreciated in this kind of beer to take center stage - the orange, honey, bready malt, hints of caramel malt and mild warm-climate fruit are in perfect balance and and out in all their glory - not for the lover of super bitter IIPAs, but a wonderful beer none-the-less.

Thanks to goldtwins for sending this brew my way - this is the first pilsner of this strength I’ve had that actually tastes like a pilsner - light copper/gold pour, with moderate lace - floral hop aroma, with buttery notes and a hint of honey - the strength is not very evident at first - strongly hopped up front (but not the typical pilsner hop flavor), light, perfume/flower flavors, then just a light honey sweetness (especially considering the abv) - the finish is mostly clean, but a slight alcohol burn at the end is what gives the beer’s strength away - kind of out of balance, and nothing spectacular, but certainly worth a try.

Bottle. Peach, tangerine and hops aroma. Dark amber orange with moderate head. LIght tangerine malt up front quickly overwhelmed by the hops. Long bitter aftertaste. Well balanced - hops flavor is not overwhelming. My dog likes it too and she’s pretty picky about her beer.
