Description
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

A hazy dark orange beer with a small white head. The aroma is sweet and lovely hoppy combined with notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with lots of hops, but also caramel. The body is thick.

2005 bottle (I assume) hand bottled by Jeffin7, thanks so much man, a very thoughtful bonus indeed!
Awesome pour. Huge, fluffy, yet almost creamy head with a cream-marble color. 3 fingers high to start and modestly well-retained. Unfiltered and beautiful orange-tea body with a touch of strawberry blonde notes and copper highlights. Aroma is fruity, with light rye spicing, like freshly baked rye dough. No alcohol yet and it’s starting at about 50 degrees. Quite perfumey and lightly estery, though. Begins with a sweet and lightly sticky caramel malt. Retronasal peaches, plums and grapefruits already, mixed together well. Also, a distinct rye and light perfume-like note A touch of breadiness at the end. Some vanilla and cinnamon in the nose now (half way through the glass). Even as it warms, still no alcohol. Some resin/pine hops acidity sticks to the back of the throat. Extremely low carbonation, but not loose or flat in the least. Just a perfect, tight, expansive bubbling sensation on the tongue. Warm now, there is some raw alcohol characteristic, but not much and no more than I would expect for the abv. The rye grainy/spiciness collects well on the palate adding some needed flavor depth. Body is medium-full to full, the sweet caramel never disappears. No water or thinning. Great beer. Could stand a bit more complex maltiness, but it’s not overdone and it’s quite well-executed. Not unlike the Middle Ages Xth I just had, but better alcohol concealment, stickier, more substantial malt (because it’s unfiltered) and the rye adds a little more depth. A bit of earthy, dry flavors at the bottom of the glass. Lacing is very faint. Thanks for the bottle, Jeff!

Terrapin Cream Ale starts with a large frothy head of white over a medium yellow body. Light lemony aroma with a bit of cooked corn. Lightly sweet and lightly acidic, reminiscent of a wit beer I suppose. Not bad, but Terrapin has set it’s own standards higherwith it’s other brews, then fails to meet it with this one.

Thanks to kp for bringing a few growlers of this to share. Very respectable and I’m sure this would have an additional few points if it were sampled at the tap. Clear medium amber color. Citrus hop aroma with some caramel in the back. Nicely hopped with a good malt balance finishing in a long hop bitterness with that touch of tartness that comes from the rye malt.

On tap Classic City Brewfest Opaque black color with a diminished head. Served too cold, after warming some, there was a nice coffee thing going on as expected. Good coffee roast malt palate and overall a well done Stout. Alcohol well hidden. Old score:7 4 7 3 15 Re-rate from the bottled version Thick dark tan head, same black body. Loads of coffee and chocolate in the nose along with roast malt. Big body, smooth, with a tangy roast malt finish. The coffe and chocolate follow the aroma for flavor. Sweet and tasty.

On tap Classic City Brewfest. Good amber color with an off white head. Lots of fresh hops in the aroma with a decent malt back up. Carmael and bitter hops are well balanced and go all the way to the long bitter finish. Very Nice.

Bottle Pours a hazy pale orange amber witha small fine fizzy head. This settles out quickly and the aroma is a malty and hoppy combo. Quite a bit of citrus, grapefruit notes in the hop side. Flavors are grassy and of light grains. A strong bitter edge but not typical hop type. Must be the rye malts. Almost a tame IPA. Refreshing, slightly bitter and a bit dry. Not bad.

This has a nice copper color and makes a decent white head. The aroma is nice, hoppy and floral yet different in some way. Hops are there in the flavor, but malt comes through nicely. Very smooth with a nice aftertaste. One of the few beers that has a commercial description that accurately describes it. I like this one. While it’s not a hop monster, there is some flavor here and it doesn’t come off as being thin and watery.

Nice light amber colour with orange highlights and a thin white head. Strong hoppy aroma with a strong ryeness. Light-bodied; Goes down too easy but leaves a bit of the hops on the palate. Overall, pretty good...strong flavour and palate with a very easy to drink taste. I had this beer on draught at Summit's in Sandy Springs (Atlanta), Georgia on 25-September-2003.
