About
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

Draft pour at Church Hall in DC. Poured a clear orange color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was tropical fruits, nice light floral character. Tropical fruit citrus, with some sweet malt notes.

Pours hazy amber with a thick white head. Aroma is intense, hops cascade from the glass while also containing malt influences. Taste is intensely hoppy, slight smoked malt flavor on the back of the tongue. Palate is malty, contains resin and hops. Good beer.

12 ounce can from Woodman's Oak Creek, 11/8/18. Hazy orange-yellow, thin frothy white head, poor retention. Aroma of lemonade, hints of tea, pale bready malt. Taste is tea, syrupy lemon, pale malt. Medium bodied, low carb (almost flat), mild lingering tartness. Okay I guess.

Terrapin up-hi ipa. Orange can. Not sure if this is it but, my can says citra-hopped. HAH, it also says boogie, slap hands, paddle, camp, surf......Yes, as described pale yellow eye. Big frothy head, dull mild fruity hop nose. Drinking a couple of gulps of this and you think it builds to the point of double IPA. Yes, just another ubiquitous terribly bitterly on style azz-kicker. Whatttttt-e hhh v v vah v v v v VAH. Not impressed with its rudeness. Cannot appreciate any so called craft IPA.

16 ounce can into snifter, 2018 vintage. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big golden raisin, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red apple, white grape, ripe banana, honey, wheat, and biscuit dough; with lighter notes of caramel, peppercorn, bubblegum, clove, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big golden raisin, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red apple, white grape, ripe banana, honey, wheat, and biscuit dough; with lighter notes of caramel, peppercorn, bubblegum, clove, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; clove/peppery yeast spiciness; and slight wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of golden raisin, peach, plum, pear, apricot, red apple, white grape, ripe banana, honey, wheat, biscuit dough, caramel, peppercorn, bubblegum, clove, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and yeast spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 10.8%. Overall this is an awesome wheatwine! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malts, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on with the mellowly bitter/spicy/drying finish. Perfectly balanced fruity/spicy yeast, rich honey, and pale/wheat malts; with solid earthy hops against sweetness. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example. Have not had too many with actual weizen yeast, but this definitely has it. Big on banana.

Tap at Miller’s Alehouse in Orlando. A bit of old malt and piney hops mixing into a mediocre beer. Beautiful clear gold with pristine white head.
