Description
Small Town Brewery is dedicated to crafting gruit-inspired beers. Gruit–German for herbs–describes the ancient practice of bittering ales with roots, spices, flowers, and berries. Tim Kovac, founder and brewmaster of Small Town Brewery, uses a proprietary technique to infuse a specialty blend of herbs and spices into his brewing process to create gruit-inspired beers with the unmistakable taste of nostalgia featuring classic American flavors.

Thanks, snuffy. This is an odd beer. It’s quite fizzy. Medium dark brown in color. Looks fairly clear in the light. The head dies away quickly, and you’re left with a flat glass of what looks like root beer. It smells like root beer. Pitch perfect. Honey, cola, a little ginger maybe, caramel sweetness, vanilla, a smidge of citrus. Pretty much root beer. Taste is also very root beer-ish. It’s sweet with a woody twist. The alcohol is present but light and could almost be mistaken for some sort of woody spice addition. I’ve had harsher root beers with no alcohol. Quite a bit of sweetness, like, well, root beer. Mouthfeel is spot on root beer. Fizzy with some cola slickness from the sugar. Easy to drink. I could see getting drunk on this stuff without realizing it. Fun beer. They nailed the root beer beer thing. Kinda unsure how to score it.

Thanks Patrick. This is rated as a root beer.
This was poured into a non-iced mug.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black with a fizzy bubbly head that left no lacing.
The smell had a thick sweet caramel, vanilla and licorice wrapping up into the root beer - esque flavor.
The taste was sweet through the previously mentioned flavors and lead to a bitter beer like aftertaste. There was a sticky sweet finish, just like root beer.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a good root beer soda like sessionability. Carbonated at a good level as a root beer, enough harshness grasps my tongue tightly.
Overall, as a root beer this one works. With a nice alcohol level, it’s still good. The aftertaste might be something to get used to but I could get used to it if I wanted to.

Bottle. Rating 10,300. Pours black. Quick dissipating white head. Nose/taste of root beer, sarsaparilla, vanilla. Lighter medium body. Tastes like root beer. I love root beer. If you love root beer you’ll love this. If you don’t, you’ll hate it.

12 oz. bottle with an ABV of 5.9 %. The soda pop tastes good but it’s not a beer. Ok folks is this what it has come down to? Rating soda that has alcohol in it.... just because it has alcohol in it, doesn’t make it a beer. After looking up this "brewery" that is contracted out (and doesn’t brew much else for that matter) no way should this rateable, but what do I know?? Plain and simple this is soda.

Recent extra in a trade. 5.9% version. Very dark reddish brown beer with a 2 finger off-white head. Well, this smells like root beer. Sarsaparilla, vanilla, brown sugar. not a lot to say here. It tastes like freaking Root Beer Creamy, vanilla forward, Dr. Pepper, cinnamon, brown sugar and a little bit of boozy finish.

Bottle. I honestly don’t know how to rate this. Pours like rootbeer. Small fizzy off-white head that fizzes away just like root beer (other than A&W, of course) Smells like root beer. Tastes like root beer. Alcohol effectively undetectable. Weird. Rated on how well they emulated a root beer with a malt beverage? 5.0 for sure, but then again, if I want a root beer, why am I grabbing a beer from the fridge?

Pours a translucent brown with lots of effervescence, not unlike a root beer. Aroma is of birch sap, caramel, wintergreen a little, vanilla, not unlike a root beer. Flavor is like root beer, not unlike a root beer. This shit’ll get you drunk, unlike a root beer.

12 oz bottle from xdtfx. Nose is sweet cinnamon, sarsaparilla, and chicory with a slight licorice hint. Clear brown with a small beige head. Flavor is sweet vanilla, with a nice root beer spice mix. Too back they don’t allow sassafras like my neighbors used when I was a little kid but it’s now considered carcinogenic. Nice that I traded for two sixers!

12oz bottle pours a murky, deep brown with a ring of white head. Nose is just like a god damned rootbeer, soda, mild licorice, some tarragon, plenty of vanilla. Flavor is... the same, actually a little worse, very sweet, vanilla, anise. Strange.
