Description
Brasserie Vander Linden was founded in 1895 by the Ghyssels brothers, and operated by three generations of the Vander Linden family from 1930 until closing in 2001. Brothers Jos and Omer Vander Linden were the last owners, and couldn't find a buyer for the brewery.
Vander Linden produced Duivels Bier, a spontaneously fermented sour brown ale that was very popular regionally from 1952-2001. The brand and recipe were acquired from Pêtre Freres, another Halle brewery that had closed, where it had been brewed since 1883. In 2003, Frank Boon acquired the rights to the name and continues producing it today.
In 2008, the former brewery site (Brouwerijstraat 2, 1500 Halle) was demolished and later converted to apartment buildings and parking.

Old rating
Found an old rating, one of the first I ever wrote down back in ’98. Think I didn’t realise it was a Faro back then. The points and total score loose all meaning, especially as I used different scale/criteria back then. Just putting it here to preserve the memory and for the quirkiness of it.
Dark brown colour, slight brownish head. Aroma rather sweet, like honey, caramel, bit sour and fruity. Flavour rather (too) sweet, molasses, caramel, no hops bitterness. Quite one-dimensional.
(From 25cL bottle)

Re-rate 10/24/13: Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Pallieter85. 1983 bottle. Murky red with a tiny bit of foam. Pleasant raspberry aroma with some cork and some wood. Sour flavor with light sweetish notes, lots of raspberries, oak, a bit of cork, musty notes and some funk. Light to medium-bodied. Very nice. Still a lot of raspberries after 30 years. 8/3/8/3/16=3.8
[3/3/11] Bottle at Bier Circus in Brussels. 1993 vintage. Surprisingly almost clear red-amber with a slightly pinkish white head. Lovely aroma full of raspberries, lactic notes and some funk. A rather sweet flavor with raspberry, a bit of sugar and some slightly funky sourness. Silky mouthfeel. A lovely sweeter Framboise. 7/3/8/4/15=3.7

Corked demi bottle from Ølbutikken, circa 1990, 19 years old
The cork is in good conditions; it pours an orange amber color with generous head; the persistent perlage support the cap. The initial aroma out of the bottle neck is the most interesting, woody and musky; from the glass there is a delicate aroma of raspberries and sweet wood, light perfume. Good body structure; round malt flavor; the acidity is very low, the fruity touch even less; unfortunately the tannins from the cherry turned into a strange astringency, and the mouthfeel is dusty too, rather unpleasant in the end. It didn’t age gracefully.

Nichts Besonderes. Test vom 11.8.2008, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: -,9,10,8,10,9
