Brouwerij Vander Linden
Microbrewery in Halle, Flemish Brabant, Belgium 🇧🇪
Established in 1895
Closed in 2001
Vander Linden produced Duivels Bier, a spontaneously fermented sour brown ale that was very popular regionally from 1952-2001. The brand and recipe were acquired from Pêtre Freres, another Halle brewery that had closed, where it had been brewed since 1883. In 2003, Frank Boon acquired the rights to the name and continues producing it today.
In 2008, the former brewery site (Brouwerijstraat 2, 1500 Halle) was demolished and later converted to apartment buildings and parking.

Bottle, 375ml corked. Unknown vintage. Impossible to get the cork out in one piece. It's almost clear in the glass, dark golden in color and flat. Citrusy, funky aroma with barnyard, lemon and leather. Some caramel hints. It's medium to full-bodied and tart and acidic on the palate, no carbonation left. Funky flavor too, lemon, barnyard, leather and a caramel touch that is more oxidation than caramel. Medium length finish. Really delicious this one, as Vanderlinden closed down in 2001, it's a very old beer, but still delivers. 240906

Old dusty bottle from Tore’s garage. Unclear dark golden body without any head. Quite pleasant aroma with funk, lemon and ripe fruit. Taste is smooth with soft malt, ripe fruit, gentle acidity and hint of oxidation. Sweet and acidic impression. Balanced body with long lasting, pleasant aftertaste. Impressive that this stuff is still very drinkable after more than 20 years.

Ruby brown color. Small frothy head. Aroma has honey and tropical fruit. No sourness at all, which is surprising. Caramel and sherry. Watery and a hint of metal in the finish. Some milk chocolate. Very unusual beer.
Dirty brown: old books, orange rind, lemon and oaky funk. 3.8

The traditional kriek from Vander Linden, a lambic brewery in Halle that closed down some twenty years ago but will always be remembered by lambic lovers for its Duivelsbier, a kind of extra strong faro they invented (and which inspired Boon's Duivels Bier Donker). This rating is based on a 37.5 cl vintage bottle of 26 years old, sampled at Heeren Van Liedekercke. Typical 'very old beer head': loose, large, off-white bubbles, retaining for a while but eventually completely gone of course, over a clear (filtered!), vermillion red beer with amberish tinge - the amberish aspect no doubt coming from age, and I suspect some of the ruby redness from the cherries has also faded by now. Aroma shows all signs of long term aging: a lot of damp cellar, moldy old wood, cherry wine, raspberry vinegar, very old rosé wine, goat cheese, quite pronounced soaking wet cardboard, sweet sherry, apparent but still light and elegant aspects of 'rusty' oxidation. Sour onset but relatively mildly so, clearly a "malse" kriek, hints of dried cranberries, sour apples and obviously sour cherries, some sweetish dried apricot underneath; somewhat vinous, bit metallic, expectedly undercarbonated body, already a bit thinned (and clearly 'defruited') by age, smooth and clean 'white bread' body drenched in a red wine vinegar-like sourness without becoming harsh, drying though especially in the finish, where the sour cherries shine one more time before going down into oblivion, aided by some old wood or cherry pit tannins and retronasal damp cellar and oxidized old sherry notes. Clearly long past its prime, but still balanced in flavour and elegant, sour in a mellow way and complex enough to remain enjoyable if you're a lambic geek like myself.

Bottle shared with Adamnowek and tderoeck. Murky red/brown colour, no foam, still very light carbonation. Bottle from 70s? Fruity nose of cherries, candy sugar. Taste is sweet, fruity, oxidized. Interesting but too old.

20/VII/17 - 25cl bottle @ home - BB: no date, but a very old bottle, given the fact it didn't have it's own "kriek" label, but instead a general "Vanderlinden" label and the "Vieux Foudre Kriek" as a neck-label to specify (2017-1056) Thanks to JefVerstraete for sharing the bottle!
Pretty cloudy (I guess it's the bike ride :p) copper to pale rusty red beer, no head. Aroma: pretty sourish and funky, definitely lambic smell still, very oxidized, sweetish, fruity, some vanilla notes. MF: very soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish, very sweet impression, very oxidized, caramel, bitter touch. Aftertaste: some tannins, sweet cherry candy flavour, cardboard, more oxidation, some peach candy, still pretty sour though, but overall it's mainly sugary with cherry candy flavour. A bit metallic and dry in the finish (some tannins?). Awesome find from Jef! :-)

Bottle ( 25 cl ) . The backlabel ( if there ever was any ) is missing, and I see no date anywhere on bottle or cap. Presumable around 2000 ??? Pours very dark, nearly black, even. Small white head. Smell is sharp, very port-like sweetness. Taste is mostly oxidation, mildly metallic ( builds up towards the back ) very watery MF. Very mild carbo. There’s an incredibly small aspect of what seems to be funk , but it’s very hidden. Overall, think of oxidized water. Over it’s prime, but probably wasn’t the best one to begin with ?
