Description
David Cole and Peter Erickson are the founders and co-owners of Epic Brewing Company. Cole and Erickson, originally from California, started an international aquaculture company in Utah in 1992. In 2008, Utah law changed allowing these two entrepreneurs to pursue their longtime dream of opening a strong beer microbrewery in Utah, like those they frequented in the Golden State.
Admittedly, beer geeks, foodies, and "Epic" adventure junkies, share a passion for making and drinking fine ales and lagers. The Epic team has a strong belief in doing everything "all out."

Courtesy of douglas88. Pours clear deep copper with tan head. The aroma is full with tart grapefruit, spicy hops, earthy hops, a touch of floral hops and faint maltiness deep in the background. The taste is full up bitter hops with bold citrus, floral, pine and spicy hops rider over the top of lesser notes such as earthy hops and faint molasses. The hops have robust bitterness and only a mild level of hop flavor. This hop profile has far more floral in it than almost any hoppy barleywine than I can think of. After having the pleasure of trying countless dozens of hop forward barleywines that are almost exclusively pine and/or citrus this floral component here seems out of place.

Bomber courtesy of douglas88. Pours hazy bright gold with bright white head. The aroma has a mild level of funk, a bit of pepperiness, wet leather, apples, pears, a slight mineral sense and assorted yeasty spices. The taste has a touch of pepper leading into spices and then apples, pears, mild funk and more spiciness. Toward the finish a yeasty notes joins in to add a little extra texture to the after taste. Yummy stuff.

Location: Draft at Capital Ale, 11/23/10

Aroma: The nose is fairly hoppy, grapefruit/citrus, pine, some spice, and a little caramel
Appearance: The pour is was somewhat hazy with a copper color and a frothy white head
Flavor: The taste has some sweetness up-front with a fairly large hoppy bitterness as well
Palate: The body is medium, it has a fairly clean and crisp mouthfeel and a nice finish
Overall Impression: This was the first thing I've tried from Epic Brewing, and I was fairly impressed. This is the type of beer I could definitely drink more of. Really good stuff.

Bomber at Churchkey. Murky amber color, large tan head. Aroma of orange peel and malt. Taste is lightly bitter with light spice. Incredible body. Not really a mild ale, but still a tasty twist on an ESB.

OK, I struggled with this one. Dave described it as a "love it or hate it" kind of beer - I don’t think I’m in either camp. It just confused me. I expected a typical smokey aroma, but it was more like apricot jam. The flavor had a sweet/sour start that changed to burnt duck fat, with a bit of whiskey and vanilla as it warmed. The complexity was there, but there were too many flavor clashes for me, and it seemed a bit unbalanced. I was very happy with the other Epic brews I tried, so I think I’ll stick to them.
