Nine Locks Brewing Co.
Microbrewery

Nova Scotia,
Canada 🇨🇦
Associated Venue: Your Father's Moustache
One night in the summer of 2014, Shaun and Danny (O’Hearn), his cousin and next door neighbor, were having a few craft beers around the backyard fire talking about beer and how Nova Scotia needed more great micro breweries. Soon, they started talking about how great it would be to open a full-fledged microbrewery and use the proven recipes from the brewpub to produce the same great beer on a larger scale. Like many talks around a fire on a warm summer night, the more they drank, the more it sounded like a great idea! When they both woke up the next morning (late morning), the late night discussions came back to them and it really didn’t sound like crazy talk. Soon, discussions turned into planning, and then that turned into securing a location, and before they knew it, they were building a brewery.

On tap at the Bicycle Thief in Halifax. Pours a hazy yellow with a light head. Aromas and flavors of soft fruity wheat. Mild and a bit watery. Easy to drink but not memorable.

A big, well laced off-white on a translucent golden body. Evident effervescence. The nose shows off the IBUs - fresh grapefruit, orange and some pine resin. The taste features more punchy hops. Notes of grapefruit, orange, lemon and floral elements work well over bready malt. Touches of soap and pepper, and a dry finish, all add to a tasty IPA.

On tap at Your Fathers Moustache. Pours clear blonde with a white head. Skunky grass and pale malts on the nose. Flavour has damp grass and soggy digestive cookies. Not very good.

On tap at Your Fathers Moustache. Pours clear deep amber with a white head. Dry caramel and toasted bread on the nose. Flavour has bready malts, a bit chewy, some dry chewy toffee-like caramel. It's a pretty mediocre red.

On tap at Your Fathers Moustache. Pours murky dull yellow with a white head. Bright berries on the nose. Flavour has bright berries and a thinning chemical cleaner aspect. It's not particularly good.

On tap at 2 Doors Down. Over carbonation was my first impression. Reasonable after a wait of 20 mins. Still not really a APA.

A 20 oz draft pour at the Shoreline, Digby. My first watermelon beer, and it was a good one.

A 473ml can at The Island Nest restaurant's deck in Isle Madame looking out to the islands. A very well made IPA, my favourite beer from this brewery so far.
