Bottle. Deep honey golden color with orange tints, high head. Citrus nose—sweet orange, biscuit, bread, honey. Somewhat spicy yeast. Sweet lemon and orange flavor with honey. Quite flowery, but with strong bitterness too. Smooth and silky, a bit heavy. Decent but not special.

before i got into craft beers, this was my favourite ! there’s no complexity, at all. its just sweet, but weet in a good way. its nothing like a barbar or a kriek. its just a very good beer and the onley one i could drink more than 1 in a row withoud getting tired of this. ( to a level we never left the bar with them still having nello’s )

29/VI/2012 - 33cl bottle @ Bier Central (Antwerpen) - BB: not indicated on the bottle (2012-672)

Clear ruby red to purple beer, big aery off-white head, pretty adhesive. Aroma: ripe to overripe fruits, some caramel, banana, bit dusty, milk chocolate. MF: ok carbon, light to medium body. Taste: banana, mocha, dark chocolate, roasted malts, bitter hops. Aftertaste: cocoa powder, mocha, coffee. Meh, boring.

Brown 33cl bottle with loads of Japanese on the rear label (I bought it in Belgium!). Best before 29 Sept 2012, drank as my second beer during one of my ’random beer tasting’ evenings in Aug 2010. Poured into a stemmed ’Hoegaarden Grand Cru’ tulip glass. Dull light orange body with a large snowy white head sat on top and trying to get out the glass. Most of the sediment stayed in the bottle, but some managed to get out, hence the dullness of the colour (maybe). So, so Belgian in aroma and initial taste: somehow the yeast esters just tell you that you’ve got a Belgian beer in your hand, this certainly did. It is fairly sweet both in smell and flavour, clean tasting and very drinkable. All Spice and summer flower garden (sweet pea and daisies) sort of feel to it. This beer came out best in the evenings scoring, against some other good beers.

Brown 33cl bottle, bought in Belgium, but with Japanese on the rear label? This was the fourth beer on one of my ’random beer tasting evenings’ with the wife. Best before 3 Nov 2011, drank Aug 2010. Poured into a Westmalle chalice: Reddy brown and clear body, no lumps or bumpd flaoting about, so all the sediment stayed in the bottle. The off-white head soon turned into a thin wisp and collar. The aroma and flavours within the taste were disappointingly sweet, molasses and a pronounced sugary malted beer taste just killed the beer for me (and the wife). There was no substance to the beer, thin and weak for the style, I know they can be sweet, but this was a poor example of the type and obviously for the export market.

25 cl. draft sampled @ De Groote Witte Arend: – A: amber red with a white head – S: grains, wheat, esters, touch of hop, no kriek or cherry – T: grains, wheat, spices, esters, booze, slight hint of cherry jam in the finish, almost not sure if I could find it if I weren’t looking for it, amazingly little fruit in here, I was expecting the usual white sugar & cherry grenadine bomb but almost no fruit in here, very odd, not that very different from the Arend Blond which I tried also De Groote Witte Arend – B: medium

33 cl. bottle sampled @ De Groote Witte Arend – A: mahogany red/brown with a white head – S: sweet, caramel malts mixed with candy sugar & cherry jam but it is all kind of muddled & murky which definitely takes a notch down T: rather odd, sweet, caramel malts mixed with liquor cherries with the kind of liquor you get inside those dominating here, muddled grains, toasted malts & dark fruits – B: pretty standard – rather muddled & odd but unfortunately in a very middling “meh” kind of way

33 cl. bottle @ De Groote Witte Arend – A: hazy, murky, wheat golden with a white head – S: plenty of boozy fruity esters (incl. peach & citrus), dull hops & malts plus spices – T: lots of esters, bitter, grains, dull-one note Belgian hops, bland malt, spices & booze – B: light & too carbonated – kind of meh beer, ok beer but not worth any effort trying to get, another Proef beer of which I had previously never heard

Draft at Grote Witte Arend. Amber pour with a big white head. Cherry aroma but not a great deal of fruit in the flavour. It has a slight sourness but has been sweetened.
