Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Very dark amber colour with a light brown head. Strong aroma of hops, malt and a subtle tropical fruit aroma. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty/smoky malt characteristic with noticeable hoppiness. Aftertaste bittered from both the hops and the roasted malt. Overall, a crazy mix between a scottish and an APA, but works out fairly well. I must thank Jah_noth (Dan) for the local trade and the generous treat! I sampled this 65 cL bomber on 17-October-2003.

Poured a rich red/copper color with a creamy tan head. Aroma reminded me of a barleywine- strong caramel/toffee malts, but with grapefruit and pine hop presence. The sip begins with strong, caramely malt followed by dashes of grapefruit and pine, tangy, bitter rye and a very bitter hops aftertaste. Body was the perfect consistency for the style. I did not find the hops to be dominating or overwhelming.

A chestnut-brown, smooth Imperial that may be more reminiscent of a Sweet Stout. Thick, creamy tan head. Roasted malts and toast in the nose, followed by strong caramel, toast, sweet fruitiness and a slightly tangy aftertaste. Body is smooth and relatively thin for the style, although this complemented the flavors present here. A unique example. Reminds me a bit of Stoudt's Fat Dog, except Bear Republic is better developed.

(draught) Deep chestnut-amber; nice, slim & dense white head, good lace. Superb hoppy nose with restrained pinewood or tree-like notes, like stepping out under the canopy of a cool mixed forest. Quite hoppy taste, hop-oil character. There’s quite some malt underneath, but it gets overwhelmed all the same. Well bodied. The finish and texture are a little thinner - the overt hop character? I had hoped for a somewhat less hard taste, and the nose certainly promessed such. Can’t win them all. bottled 12/04 Seem to get more tobacco and freshly roasted coffeebean notes, ending in a chicory-like bitterness.

Brown colour with ruby highlights when held up to a light. Thin (1 centimetre) tan head with larger bubbles. Smells of high a.a. hops, alcohol, a bit of malt and a high level of 'freshness'. Medium to Thick-bodied; Strong initial hop, rye & alcohol kick which only lasts for 5 seconds then fades to a strong rye flavour with a hop background and an alcoholic burn. The aftertaste is very bittering, a bit too much so. The bitter flavour comes not from the hops, but from the rye (or other grain). Overall, a fairly different beer than any other I've had and definately worth a try if you think you'll like the flavours going on with this one. Overall about average for the style...but if you throw in Imperial IPAs, this is a bit less than average. I bought this 22 ounce bottle from Norm's in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 1-September-2003.

Golden colour with a nice fluffy slightly off-white head. The smell was hoppy and more citrusy hops than anything else. The taste was a bit watery, but definately a good mix of malt and hops...not too overpowering in either category. Overall a pretty standard IPA, which is a bit disapointing having this one come from California. I bought this at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia, in the 22 ounce bottle.

Really nice. Hoppy nose. Brownish low head. Slightly burned and light taninlike rye flavors. Nice hoppyness rounds everything off.

Copper colored with sticky, white lacing - hearty aroma of oak and hops - the rye in the flavor adds a nice touch and keeps this from being mistaken for many other strong IPAs - the hops are assertive, but not overly bitter, leaving a lovely trace on the tongue for a nice long finish - the alcohol is very well hidden, making it not only tasty, but easy to drink - this is a great beer.

A very impressive imperial, very similar to Storm King in many respects - it has the same slight hop presence that is different for the style, yet still good as it seems to go well wih the espresso and chocolate notes - there is a slight caramel presence which is really the only thing about this beer that I think makes it any different than SK - a tasty and balanced imperial that any stout lover should try hard to get his hands on.

Bottled. Thanks jcalabre!! Very black with dark beige head. Roasty, salty licorice aroma. Dry and softly malty with notes of coffee. Very rich and powerful. Salty bitter finish. It seems you can't go very wrong when making a dry imperial stout, and this is just fabulous.
