About
La brasserie artisanale Saint-Monon est une entreprise familiale née en 1996, située à Ambly, à la limite de l’Ardenne et de la Famenne.

Saint-Monon beer was born in 1996 in the heart of the Famenne, land of brigandage and legends located at the gateway to the Belgian Ardennes. This beverage straight out of the imagination of the youngest Walloon brewer in, Pierre Jacob, quickly acquired its letters of nobility.

Pierre Jacob is an industrial engineer in the food industry. Nature, he works with and he respects it. His farm is 100% self-sufficient in electricity, the filtration residues from his beers are converted into food for the village animals, organic waste is composted, he works with recycled paper and cardboard boxes.

Spelt beer referring to the Gallo-Roman age, with yellowish white, dense, moussy head and orangey peach blonde colour, misty, brownish with deposit. Spicy aroma of ginger, nutmeg, grains including spelt, grapefruit; spicy, dry, fruity and yeasty taste, completely ruined by bacterial lactic acidity, clearly the result of an infection.

Commissioned wheat beer with sticky, white head and ochre blonde colour, hazy. ’Wild’ aroma, yoghurt, sour cream, lemon, bready malts, banana, pear. Lemony acidity in the onset, bit lactic sourness too, bready malt base, rather thin mouthfeel, somewhat phenolic and unpleasant ending. Atypical if considered a witbier and not very satisfying.

The blonde one in this series of commissioned beers for a shop in La Roche, with stable, off-white head (captured after strong gushing!), murky ochre blonde colour with orange glow. Aroma powerfully fruity, peach, persimmon, orange, apple, straw, nutmeg, coriander, grapefruit; fruity taste with surprisingly low carbonation in relation to the gushing, smooth caramel malts, sweetish, florally bitterish finish.

Commissioned by a souvenir shop of which the proprietor apparently helped develop the recipe. Cream white, dense, pretty stable head, warm brownish copper colour, misty. Caramelly and nutty malts, very spicy as usual for this brewery, coriander, cinnamon, liquorice, cloves, nutmeg, apple, grape, orange, bark, grass, pepper, sulphur, honey and something unpleasantly, but luckily subtle solvent-like. Smooth, round palate, light maltiness, fruity with perhaps too obvious (real) spices, medium carbo, medium hop bitterness in the finish, bit phenolic, yeasty and a bit saison-like. Too bad for the somewhat chemical smell and taste effects, this would have been a very decent ale otherwise.

Commissioned by ASBL Terre de Durbuy. Off-white, quickly collapsing and eventually disappearing head, colour warm orange amber, misty. Aroma of dried fruits and spices, walnuts, caramel, grass, honey, mango, tomato, vanilla, nutmeg. Restrained fruitiness in the taste, mineral touch, very yeasty (a bit ’dusty’ even), bready and nutty malts, dry with spicy accents, bit sourish due to mild infection, brief and mild hoppiness in the finish. Clearly out of balance.

Strong amber commissioned by Arelbières in Arlon, with thick, creamy, off-white, sticky head and bright copper colour. Spicy and fruity aroma of honey, apricot, pepper, aniseed, ginger, citrus peel, whisky, flowery hops. Sourish onset, then turning sweetish, light citrus, caramelly maltiness, spicy notes, finishing mildly flowery hoppy with warming alcohol, but the spices - typically overused as this brewery so often does - also generate a drying effect. Nonetheless quite an agreeable brew.
