12 oz. bottle, dated 12/12/07. Yep, shared with Cornfield, and with Matt and Andrew at Flossmoor, because Matt let me fill a swingtop of Frambozner to trade with douglas88 for this rare treat (but it turns out my shipment broke)…
Anyway: brandy and garnet color. How do I say this–fruits and malts in nose, "light" but persistent. This is quite a young barelywine, and an example of the American style as it’s stuffed with hops. So there’s plenty of bitterness, but it’s on top of some very strong caramel malts. Kind of a burn as it goes down, but the kind you want with single-digit temps outside. We’re all agreed this might be fabulous if it were laid down for a few years, but I wanted to make sure to share with the very architects of this malty feast.

Draft. XII vintage. Rich amber beer with a light tan head. Caramel aroma. Rich caramel, light hop, nice earthy flavor. LIngering piney hops with earthy caramel. Medium body. Judging from other reviews, the aging really does help.

This beer came to me in my beer club. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a very large brown head. The aroma was roasty, bitter and had hints of coffee. The flavor was dry, roasty and bitter with notes of coffee and floral hops. The finish was long, bitter and roasty.

This beer came in my beer club. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma was sweet, sugary a bit yeasty and had a ripe fruit element. The flavor was sweet, tangy, yeasty and moderately fruity. Fairly full bodied. Nice.

Grapefruit and caramel bouquet. Golden color, thin yellow head. Pine needle taste. It tastes fine, but is sort of mundane.

XIV Anniversary 12 oz bottle from Utah State Liquor Store in Salt Lake City; bottled on 07/10/07; Nose of raisins, malt, and light hopiness; purplish amber with a big rusty tinted head; flavor of dark fruit, hop bitterness, and light alcohol; finish is just plain bitter but not hoppy!

Bottle of the XIII vintage: Pours a dark amber color with a small, creamy beige head. Good lacing. Nose is malt oriented with some citrus and fruitiness. Flavor is rich maltiness, with a crisp citrus hops, fruitiness, and some caramel. Nice, crisp hops in the tail.

A light fruity aroma. Pale golden color with a respectable white head that leaves lace tatters. Medium bodied. A bit fizzy, but not harshly so. Seems to be citrus fruit, perhaps with a touch of floral hop. The malt is light biscuit at best - the whole impact is light. There is enough bitter to consider this balanced, but it didn’t take much. There is some kind of mild spicey "burn" on the tongue - don’t think it’s from the carbonation. Interestingly different. Don’t know how this qualifies as pilsener, other than the Saaz. Which really seems to show itself only in the bitter in the finish.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for giving us this bottle (a new state for me!) - 13th anniversary version - medium amber pour, with no head to speak of - fairly complex aroma, with caramel and roasted malts, flaked oats, brown sugar, green hops, woody touches, and hints of whiskey - low carbonation, pretty full-bodied - piney hops up front, with a fairly high bitterness (not quite bigfoot-like, but close) - cherry, plum and other darker fruit notes - brown sugar and caramel, with some roasty hints around the edges - burnt notes/caramelized sugar in the finish - well-masked alcohol - a pretty good barleywine, but still a little young.

Clear dark ruby body body with a small off-white head. Sweet bready aroma with some caramel and molassas. Sweet chocolate and molassas flavor, some light breadiness and a floral hop bitter ending.
