Description
Brewery 't Paenhuys was established in 2010 by hobbybrewer Paul Van Nieulande. A Paenhuys is a brewery. Every village used to have one. The Paenhuys or house of pans puts his brewing equipment at the disposition of the residents of the village. The brewer assisted in brewing the resident’s own recipes. On occasions such as weddings, births or other, a brew was made which could be consumed a few weeks later. The Paenhuys supplied the ingredients and took a part of the brew when it turned out to be delicious. Even today you can brew your own beer at our brewery ‘t Paenhuys.

Thanks to tderoeck! 750 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBWG IV. Hazy golden. Nose is sweet iron, other grain, sour lactic wheat. Tastes of nasty cow milk yoghurt, spoiled, sourish, white sugar, other grains, sour wheat. Other grains + sugar body. Unpleasant. This is supposed to make want to safe their village?

Bottle @ RBBWG 2015 shared by tderoeck. Hazy yellow color, medium sized white head. Probably has a slight infection but this time it has worked out, it has actually become quite decent. A slight sour touch has replaced the typical yeasty slightly banana flavors. A light bitter finish, lightly fruity, lightly sourish fruits. Decent body and carbonation. If it is really accidentally sourish it’s probably gonna deteriorate.

Dubbel since 2012 with thinnish but stable, off-white head over a hazy bronze coloured beer. Aroma of walnuts, blueberries, port wine, caramel, nutmeg and sourish hints; sweetish taste, subdued fruitiness, caramelly with a resinous and somewhat thin mouthfeel, spicy finish with some leafy hop bitterness, but not too well-balanced.

Winter version of Zwarte Zjef made in a town near Sint-Niklaas in Eastern Flanders. Beige, thin, stable head, deep murky bronze colour. Aroma of caramelly and chocolatey malts, dried leaves, coffee grounds, raisins, spiciness. Candied fruit sweetness and malt sweetness in the mouth, hint of candi syrup, yeasty, then something weirdly soy sauce-like appears, finish roasted bitterish with another weird, medicinal touch, in an utterly unpleasant, clinical, band aid kind of way. Started off fine, ended rather... well, disappointingly, to say the least. I must, however, give this beer the benefit of the doubt: they have been tinkering with the recipe a lot since I last tasted it and considering the evolution their other beers have undergone, I suspect this beer has significantly improved meanwhile. Will surely taste again.
