Strong blond named after the inhabitants of Nieuwkerken-Waas near Sint-Niklaas (the city where the Zythos Beer Festival was held before it moved to Leuven). Thinnish, milky white head and light blond colour, almost clear (at least from tap); aroma of banana, vanilla, white bread, peach, something faintly meaty and some DMS (cooked vegetables); fruity, malt sweetish taste, some banana, rounded palate with spicy notes, grassy hop bitterishness in the finish. Decent without being great, just another tripel to me.

Bottle thnx to a customer ! Apparently brewed for a Beerclub in Beveren . Pours clear blonde, good white head . Smell is intense, hoppy , grainy, tad sweet . Bit fruity , Nice ! Taste is bitter , funky ( bit brett-ish taste even ) , grains , high carbo . Aftertaste also has a lot of brett - hops . Is this a brett IPA ? Nowhere stated on the bottle this contains brett... Very nice one

Sampled draft @ Modeste 2014. Hazy orange, little white head. Smell is myoglobin (first time I’m using this for a review) & grilled meat, very strange. Taste is sweetish malt, orange, citrus, sugar, bit blah, average BE, no myoglobin in taste, malty. Tad sweetish. Medium, tad lighter body. Okay, not very impressive but enjoyable.

English-style bitter, at least that seems to be the intention, with stable, off-white head and cloudy orangey blond colour. Aroma of green hops, soap, grapefruit, honey, apple; fruity taste, citrus touches, a bit ’raw’, smooth with spicy, ’green’ hop bitterness in the finish, long and dryish. Needs more work and certainly does not (yet) qualify as an IPA in the modern sense of the word... Enjoyable still.

Witbier from Nieuwkerken-Waas near Sint-Niklaas. Creamy, yellowish white head, cloudy yellow blonde colour with the typical greenish hue. Aroma of light citrus, wheat, grass, coriander, sour cream, cloves. Fruity and wheaty taste with the expected coriander accent, mellow, bitterish finish more so than usual for this style, unfortunately a bit phenolic as well.

New, heavy wheat beer commissioned by a group of young people striving for the conservation of the small rural village of Doel, the existence of which is threatened by the expansion of the Antwerp harbour. The wheat used is cultivated in the village. Medium thick but quickly collapsing, creamy, delicate, off-white head leaving a steady rim on the edge of the glass. Colour a pinkish peach blonde, darkish and immediately completely cloudy. Aroma of overripe peaches, caramel, pineapple, fresh orange, strawberry, brown bread, wheat, earth, dried leaves, yeast, hints of walnut and bourbon. Dry fruity onset, less sweet than expected based on the sweet fruitiness in the nose, some peach, apple and red berries, subtle wheat sourness and nutty malts, dry and very yeasty with sharpish spicy accents, soft carbonation, powdery, ’dusty’ and bit starch-like mouthfeel, leafy hop bitterness near and in the finish, becoming peppery in the end, some warming alcohol, but nothing astringent. Looks a bit messy (althought this doesn’t really bother me, after all it is still a wheat beer) but the taste is good, at least if you can appreciate a strong, Belgian, estery yeastiness. Update: considering the later ratings above, it seems this beer does not age too well and the bottles I got (directly from the guys who commissioned it) must have harboured a bacterial infection which apparently gained full force after a few months... Glad I tasted it when it was still a ’newborn’. Living in the immediate proximity of Doel, I will follow up new batches of this, if any.

Hopfiger, minimal rauchiger Antrunk. Trocken hopfig und malzig, harmonisch, wenn auch etwas zu trocken. Hell, süffig, rund. Gelungen! 11/9/9/9//10
