Description
Brewery 't Paenhuys was established in 2010 by hobbybrewer Paul Van Nieulande. A Paenhuys is a brewery. Every village used to have one. The Paenhuys or house of pans puts his brewing equipment at the disposition of the residents of the village. The brewer assisted in brewing the resident’s own recipes. On occasions such as weddings, births or other, a brew was made which could be consumed a few weeks later. The Paenhuys supplied the ingredients and took a part of the brew when it turned out to be delicious. Even today you can brew your own beer at our brewery ‘t Paenhuys.

75 cl. bottle sample @ 18th Christmasbeer festival in Essen. Apparently this was intended to be a stout. Dark brown / fox red amber with a solid white head. Smell is sweet herbs, fruits, wild berries, twigs & sugar. Taste is soy sauce, the yeast couldn’t handle the final alcohol level?; dark malts, brown sugar, syrup, light bitter hop, yeasty with spices, overripe dark fruits & cough syrup. Okay body, could be a touch fuller, not very stout like, sorry. It is agreeable to me.

Very short-lived beige head; slightly veiled orange-brown beer. Short whiff of acetic, quite some lactic acid; brown candi sugar, colouring syrup; bit meaty, rainwater. Soft-sweet flavour, cheap home-made cola (kalisjenthee, retronasal hint at pickles. Brown candi sugar dissolved in water, threatening to sour. Lacking body and alcohol, missing punch, lame & watery. The nose promised Vlaams Oud Bruin. The mouth yielded oud bruin - Dutch style, aka tafelbier.

White head, fast gone over bright metallic-orange beer, looking a bit dead. End of bottle solid yeast. Rather oppressive, dry dough nose, partly white candi sugar; solvent, yeast notes. Alcoholic-sweet flavour, yeast, sugar-y as from a pastry dough, but laced with CO² - alive after all. Dry, but sugared citruspeel, honey throattablets. Spritzy, despite visual proof. Slick, medium bodied at best. More citrus/orange in the aftertaste. Attenuation seems there, but it’s too sweet for a typical triple. I get Van Steenberge hints, it would seem.

Bottle sample @ 18de Kerstbierfestival, Essen 2012.

Sampled at OBER Kerstbierfestival 2012. Hazy a bit murky brownish color, small quickly disappearing off-white head. Smell and taste malts, alcohol, caramel and some sweetness. Fizzy carbonation, medium body. Ok beer but nothing more than that.
