Description
Brewery 't Paenhuys was established in 2010 by hobbybrewer Paul Van Nieulande. A Paenhuys is a brewery. Every village used to have one. The Paenhuys or house of pans puts his brewing equipment at the disposition of the residents of the village. The brewer assisted in brewing the resident’s own recipes. On occasions such as weddings, births or other, a brew was made which could be consumed a few weeks later. The Paenhuys supplied the ingredients and took a part of the brew when it turned out to be delicious. Even today you can brew your own beer at our brewery ‘t Paenhuys.

Bit cloudy mud brown beer, creamy light beige head, pretty stable, non adhesive. aroma: pretty spicy, overripe to rotten fruits, bit sweet, definitely something off. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: cough syrup, sugary, little bitter, caramel, overripe fruits. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, dried fruits, something nasty. Can't put my finger on it, but something is terribly wrong with it.

33 cl. bottle - sampled @ Modest 2012 - supposed to be the more bitter / hoppier beer of their gamma it appears - neat label as with the others - darker shade of amber, lightly tanned head - heavier on the caramel malts nose, belgian in style but bit overpowered by the latter, some spices, herbs, mellower thinner, bit dominated by duller yeast - sweeter caramel, fruits, bit weaker, belgian side, yeast, spics, brown sugar, sweet herbal, hops are rather light, some buttermilk - medium bodied- passable, standard fare, some attempts, light results to be found

33 cl. bottle - sampled - Modeste 2012 - dark brown, little mocha head - dark fruits, belgian yeast and style, chocolate, coffee leading into a sour berry, light vinous finish - between a light stout and fuller Belgian body - brewed to be a lighter stout beer according to brewer - approachable, good stuff

Small white head; coppery-orange beer. Alcoholic nose; caramel, sweet-smelling. IPA, or bitter even??? Bitterish-sweet, maybe a hint to Belgian endives witloof. But - where are the hops?? Insipid! Low carbonation (small wonder, seen the way it was poured), slick, medium bodied. OH dear; if you want to make a bitter, go UK, want an IPA, go to the States. And before that, learn to pour a pint, bl***y hell. From a glass, covered with a beermat into another glass, for shame!!

Medium yellowish-cream ehad over brownish-red beer. Nutty, bready, sweetish. Molasses, candisyrup, overripe banana. Diacetyl, sweetish-buttery. Finish has some roastiness finally. Thick, buttery oily MF. 1° There’s quite some work to do here... 2° Whatever they may call it, this is not a stout in my book.

Small yellowish head over fully hazy straw-yellow beer. Meaty-yeasty noe with (lightly smoked) ham, but also banana and clove. Overall aroma as some German Sauerkraut dish. Sourish-wheaty taste, again banana/clove/orange, as a German Hefeweizen. Finish is citrussy. Quite carbonated. Beer feels as if it is still in full fermentation, lagertank fashion, if for the carbonation. Too young by half, unsatisfying as such.

18/VIII/2012 - 33cl bottle from the brewer @ home - BB: n/a (2012-621) Thanks to Paul for the bottle!
Pretty cloudy red brown beer, nice creamy light beige head, very stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: citrus, bit grassy, caramel, yeast, bit of dried orange peel, dusty, sugar bread. MF: lively carbon, medium to light body. Taste: some chocolate, overripe fruits, carbon sour, orange peel, some citrus. Aftertaste: overripe fruits, sour berries, somewhat chocolaty, little bitter. Very a-typical for a Belgian brown.
14/VI/2012 - 33cl bottle as "Zotte Bloare" @ home - BB: no markings on side of bottle to indicate the BB-date (2012-621)
Note: probably an error has occurred during labeling, because this was not a brown beer at all. Trying to figure out with someone from the brewery now, which beer it could have been.
Little cloudy blond beer, very big aery to creamy white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty yeasty, lots of spices, coriander, grassy. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty sweet start, citrus, lots of spices, grassy bitterness, malts (wheat?), little fruity. Aftertaste: wheat again? Little sweet, spices, coriander, dry finish.

33cl bottle bought at Vilvordia’12.
