Description
The New Albion Brewing Company® was founded in Sonoma, California in 1976 by Jack McAuliffe, known as the “father of craft beer” in the United States. The first post-Prohibition microbrewery, New Albion was built from the ground-up by Jack, who longed to taste the beers he came to love while serving in Europe in the Navy in the 1960s. Shuttered in 1982, New Albion Brewing served as an inspiration to countless other home brewers who wanted to share their beers with the world. New Albion Ale was revived in 2013 by Jim Koch and the Boston Beer Company, and installed as part of the Smithsonian Institution’s “Brewing a Revolution” exhibit in 2019.

Originally based out of Sonoma, California and since 2013 out of Cleveland, OH.

Admin: Brewing was being done at Platform Beer Company in Ohio, but has stopped and now turns up periodically as a collaboration with Raleigh Brewing Company or in Ohio as a collaboration.

2,700th Rating! This packs a surprising punch for a beer with such a simple recipe (two-row, Cascades, and that’s it). Very pale color, like any standard pale lager, bubbles up to support a thick head. Mild hop smell. But on the tongue it’s a different story. But burst of hop bitterness. Cascade hops un-mellowed by any thing with pine or flowers or citrus. Probably made to feel more bitter by its lighter malt bill. Holds up well in these modern times, and I have to wonder what someone who discovered this back in 1976 after a lifetime of Bud would have thought. Hope the McAuliff family gets a chance to bring this back around.

Bottle on the Metro North train into NYC. Pours clear gold with a large, fluffy white head. Smells of dried pale malts, light spruce and thyme. Light to medium sweet flavor with some rindy citrus bitterness, pine needles, hints of white bread and melon. Light to medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Moderately citrusy to finish with simple pale malts and white bread, and mellow stone fruits. Not bad.

Almost clear gold beer with a small white head. Palate is light and crisp. Sharp fine carbonation. Slightly sweet pale malt, tastes like there is a spot of ginger spice, well buried. The malt turns a little creamy. Light sweetish citrus and then a crispy finish. Pleasant sweet Pale Ale, refreshing.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear pale gold with a half finger of white head. Aroma of frains and light floral hops. Taste is light bitter. Grains with floral and light earthy herbal hops. A little citrus in there too. Full bodied with a creamy and slightly sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, pretty good. Easy drinking and enjoyable.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Subtle floral hops with a little earth. Slight sweet malt. Clear, pale gold with moderate white head of various sized bubbles. Taste of dirt floor, slight corn and flowers. Have a slightly stinging bite half way through. Some moderate buttering. Slightly astringent.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a slightly cloudy yellow-golden color with a medium sized foamy yellow-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was semi-sweet and tangy with light pine and a bit of herbal hops. The flavor was tangy, bitter and a bit tart with faint citric and floral hops and a touch of honey. Medium length tangy and bitter citric and herbal hops. Light to medium body. Eh.
