Description
Hugel is the brewing company name of Koen Hugelier. After training in pharmaceutical and biological techniques and medical laboratory technology, Koen Hugelier worked for almost ten years at Ghent University on various scientific studies. In 2009 he became a certified zythologist and in this way got hold of the brewing bug. Because Hugelier could use a lot of knowledge from his training, it was quite easy to delve into the secrets of brewing. After some hobby brewing, Koen Hugelier was ready in 2010 to brew one of his beers in a 'big' brewery.

Brouwfirma Hugel brouwt biologische, artisanale bieren in brouwerij 'The Brew Society' in Heule.

Bottle @benzai. Pitch black with a small light brown head. Smells roasty, liquorice, sweet. Mostly liquorice though, which i’m not too excited about. Tastes wiebertjes, roasty, chocolate, liquorice, dark chocolate. Full body, nice carbo. Too bad i didn’t like the smell too much.

Bottle shared by Thonpson @ weekly tasting. Very dark brown to black color, average sized brown head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma and taste malts, lightly roasty, lightly alcohol, liquorice, a hint of dark chocolate and nicely bitter. Full body, medium to full carbonation. Well I must say I’m quite impressed by this beer. Very well done.

Dark rusty-brown head, rather stable over deep-brown opaque beer. Chocolate immediately striking from the glass, bit of parsley. Caramel, toffee, roasted notes; Generally sweet nose with a roasted-woody touch. Bitter, very roasted-burnt, as meatparticles too long in the frying pan and cooled down. Scorched dark chocolate. Warming up, the harsh burnt bitterness is toned down,, letting some restsugars peeping through, but the damage is done for my, flavourwise. Well-bodied, without being really viscous/thick. Faint alcohol impression, well-hidden, soft to medium carbonation. Long lasting sweetish burnt aftertaste. Not my kind of sin, obviously.

Bottle @ weekly tasting. Dark red-brown color, virtually no head. Aroma has quite a lot of herbs and sweetness. Taste lightly malts, sweetness, lots of herbs or spices. Average to medium body, soft carbonation. Not my thing.

33 cl. bottle split by 3 @ ’t Rusteel. Ruby black with a tanned head. Nose is big on sweet spices but not as heavy as the two others I tried from the series, red grapes, sugar & thick liquorish. Taste is sweet cocoa, blue + blackberries, chocolate, slight bitter chocolate, lots of berries & liquorish with some bitter herbs in the back, thick malts & solid body. Pretty interesting & solid brew.
