22 oz bottle. Near black appearance, thin head. Aroma is weak roast, faint caramel notes. The flavor has a very flimsy malt backbone. The hops are faint. Very weak pine bitterness. I think the brewer has the right idea here. Hopefully with some more practice this will be a decent recipe.

Taster pour on tap at the brewery. Appearance is medium brown--like an iced tea--with no sparkle, a thin ring of white head and nice lacing. Aroma is lightly floral, cracker. Taste is bread and little in the way of flavor from hops. Palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation, finish as taste with some bitterness from the hops. Overall, fair, but seems more like an APA than IPA.

Taster pour at the brewery. Appearance is dark brown--almost black--with no sparkle, a thin beige head with fair retention and nice soapy lacing. Aroma is minimal roast and malty. Taste is light roast, caramel, mild bittering hops. Palate is medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, this has all the ingredients of a great black IPA but aroma and taste are not bold enough.

Taster pour at the source. Appearance is cloudy dark brown with a thin ring of beige head. Aroma is mild smoke, almost like burnt plastic. Taste is rye with a bit of the burnt flavor as the aroma. Palate is medium-to-full with a mix of slick, greasy (though not in a bad way) and slightly frothy texture, and finish as taste. Overall, the aroma and flavor are a bit muted, the appearance is average but the palate is interesting.

Taster pour at the source. Appearance is very dark brown--almost opaque black--with ring of beige head and fair soapy lacing. Aroma is rich, dark roasted malts with surprisingly light smoke. Taste is smokey, light chocolate, roasted malts. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with frothy texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, the smoke is more pronounced in the taste than the aroma and is not over the top. Nice mouthfeel.

Taster pour at the source. Appearance is opaque black with thin ring of beige head and fair soapy lacing. Aroma is roasted malts--almost burnt--and the bitterness of the coffee. Taste is milky, roasted coffee bitter. Palate is full bodied with smooth texture, soft-to-average carbonation with finish as taste. Overall, the lactose and oats provide nice smoothness and a bit of sweetness but the bitterness of the coffee dominates, but pleasantly so.

Taster pour at the source. Appearance is very dark brown--almost opaque black--with thin ring of beige head and light leggy lacing. Aroma is light candied sweetness and malty roast. Taste is candied sweetness/fruit with light chocolate and late chili spice. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with smooth texture, soft-to-average carbonation with chili spice, and finish as taste. Overall, the sugary sweetness is a little out of place and the chili aspect could be a little stronger, but at least is not beating you over the head.

From my brother: pours deep golden with a white head. Aroma is light cherry, Belgian ale yeast, sugar. Taste is sweet. Almost no hoppiness. Lingering sugar aftertaste. Mild cherry notes.

Tap at Cask and Vine Slightly hazy reddish brown with a stingy off white head. Rich caramel and deep fruit mostly cherry on the nose. Not a whole lot of saison character makes it through but there is a hint of smokey clove phenol. Not what I was expecting, but still enjoyable.

Bottle from Bert’s Mostly clear dark brown with garnet at the edges and a frothy tan head that sticks around forever. Roasty earthy pine and faint citrus on the nose. Roasty caramel and light chocolate flavor with earthy resinous pine and light citrus. Pretty nose hoppy black ale.
